Mangalore: Ganeshotsav at Bunts Hostel in City

Mangalore, Aug 14: Sarvajanika Sri Ganeshotsav Samiti, Bunts Hostel here, will be organizing its sixth annual Ganeshotsav from Wednesday August 19 to Tuesday August 25 at Omkar Nagar, Bunts Hostel in the city. During this period, various cultural and religious programmes would be organized, under the aegis of Buntara Yane Nadavara Matru Sangh and with the support of various Bunts Sanghs, other organizations and the general public, the Samiti office bearers said.

During this period, quiz, dance, plays, drawing and Bhajans competitions for different age groups will be organized. In addition to other programmes, a felicitation programme for achievers is also being arranged, it has been revealed.



On August 16, 'Bunta Kreedotsav - 2009' would be held at Bunts Hostel Ramakrishna Ground, specifically for reviving rural sports that are on the wane, like Chennemane, Lagori (teams of seven members each), making of broom sticks out of coconut fronds, wrapping of 'Mundasu(headgear)' around one's head, hair styles(Turubu), tug-of-war and such other events. The competitions will be held separately for men and women, the organizers clarified.

For the children up to six years, leap-frog race and 50-metre race would be held, while for those between six and 12 years of age, lemon and spoon and 50-metre race would be held. For those between 12 and 18 years of age, three-legged race and 100-metre race will be held. For men and women aged above 18 years, rural sports would be conducted. Relay (teams of four members each), shot put and tug-of-war would also be organized. For the winners in all the contests, cash prizes and certificates will be issued.

The contestants themselves have to bring the necessary paraphernalia required for competitions like making of broom sticks, hair styles, wrapping of the headgear etc., it has been clarified.

Demonstration of 'Kutti Donne', making of the 'mudi' to store rice, making of rope out of hay etc., will be arranged. President of Bunts Sangh, Ajit Kumar Rai Malady, who is the honorary president of the Samiti, will inaugurate ‘Bunta Kreedotsav - 2009', it has been informed. 

Talent Hunt Committee convener Dr Ashajyoti Rai and office bearers of Ganeshotsav Samiti will be present. Janapada scholar Dr Gananath Shetty Yekkar will participate as chief guest. Suratkal Bunts Sangh president Devanand Shetty and Kavoor Bunts Sangh former president Lakshman Shetty will be the chief guests of the valedictory function.
