Kochi: Kerala nun sexual abuse case gets international recognition

Daijiworld Media Network - Kochi (MS)

Kochi, Nov 13: The November issue of US-based magazine, National Geographic has featured an article praising the five nuns, who protested demanding the arrest of Bishop Franco Mulakkal of Jalandhar Diocese on the accusation of rape of a nun.

The main article of the magazine named, 'Around the World, women are taking charge of their future' carries the snap of the five nuns, belonging to Kulavilangad convent of Kottayam, Sisters Nina rose, Ancitta, Anupama, Josephine and Alphy. They are termed as 'Defiant Sisters, India.'

The news which is published alongside the snap of the sisters says that the five nuns were asked to maintain silence by their superiors on the matter of rape of a nun by Bishop Franco. However the gutsy nuns refused to budge and held a two-week protest in September 2018, outside the Kerala High Court, demanding the arrest of Bishop Franco. The Bishop, who acted to be unaware of the whole issue was finally arrested and later released on bail. The article also says that the church did not support the nuns but reprimanded them and also did not pay their monthly allowance.

The five nuns defied the resistance from the church and took the support of the public and held a two week protest demanding justice for the nun, who was sexually abused by Bishop Franco. Their protest finally led towards legal action against Bishop Franco.

Highly appreciate the courage of these five sisters to defy the system and rise against injustice. But for them the poor victim would have been totally helpless.

John Tauro, Mangalore. You have very well said. Your two sentences speaks a volume. May the nuns get justice at the hands of the provincial and superiors.
God has given them justice and will well rise them up for raising voice against injustice.

We need courageous nuns like these . When you stand for the truth, law of obedience takes second position. All these laws are man made ( not made).
Why is the hypocracy of protecting a bishop in a scandal - and.being critical of women who stand for the truth?
What's wrong if they decided to celebrate? We need more couragious women to save the church.
The worldly possessions and the nexus with the politicians that is prevalent in the kerala church created the situation that generated this scandal in the first place. Church needs to do its cleanup of the prevailing ambiguities I kerala.

The nuns can protest if things happened.but nuns must come out from the organization.and fight for justice. They must sacrifice their nunship. This is evident that nuns had every opportunity to oppose the behavior of bishop and also abstain from him. It appears from press news the a t is not of single person and not of coercion. As the acts of bishop and sister not morally correct they must be punished. The nuns must be come out from the congregation or dismissed. They are interested in press rather than justice.

The clergy, in the Roman Catholic Church, has on numerous occasion, sued by the abused victims, especially in the elite western nations... The recent rape, exploitation of nuns and sisters, have not gone unnoticed, by the international communities !!!!!! The scandalous sexual and financial irregularities, committed by the powerful clergy, are always pushed below the carpet, the victim's, browbeaten and threatened, to silence !!!! I commend National Geographic Channel, an eminent worldwide organisation, of repute, for bring this scandalous episodes, in the public domain !!!!! Hope and pray, that these diabolic criminals are brought to justice at the earliest !!!!!

    David

You are looking in to only one aspect here. Look from all angels, Nuns have come to the street only when even after repeated complaints to the higher authorities, they neither took any action nor they gave any satisfactory response to the nuns, rather nuns ware threatened . Here Nun is not asking the Bishop to pay money or marry him but she is asking for Justice.

    Davis Bava
    Thun khalen ulaithai saiba ?

I am not bringing religion here and at the same time i am not blind bakth also. One thing you should know by now , people followed law strictly from Bible are the one (Jews) who crucified Jesus . Law / discipline is made to live people in a righteous way and let others to live happily but here u are using law & discipline to corner / crucify others.

I agree that there is a fault from both sides but do not crucify one & glorify other.

Trust we have clarified this matter here.
