Karkala: Recovery of woman's body from well at Kalya - Accused Ronald, Stevan held

Karkala, Dec 24: In connection with the recovery of the body of a woman from a well at Kalya on December 22, the police have taken into custody two persons accused of involvement with this cime.

Bharathalaxmi Udupa (68), resident of Belman, had gone missing since December 20, and a complaint had been lodged in this connection. Her decomposed body was found from a well in Kalya village two days later. It is suspected that the woman was robbed and killed before dumping her body in a well.

The arrested accused happen to be Ronald Barboza (45) from Santhoor, and Stevan Dias (22) from Shirva. The police have recovered 65 grams of gold ornaments worth about Rs 2,25,000 they had allegedly robbed from the woman before killing her.

The body of the senior citizen was found from a well on Sunday. It was found wrapped in a tarpaulin. The house attached to the well in question usually remains uninhabited, as the lone woman resident of the house mostly stays in her husband's house. She reportedly came to check as the pump set attached to the well failed to pump water out of the well and found that a body was floating inside the well.

A case in this connection was filed in rural police station here. Police circle inspector Sampath Kumar, town station sub-inspector Madhu, rural station sub-inspector Nasir Hussain and others, under the guidance of senior officers in the department were involved with the operation.
