Bengaluru, Jan 24 (IANS): Close to 50 per cent of active carpooling users on Quick Ride are women, the ride sharing platform said on Friday after analysing travelling habits in nine cities.

"Close to half of the active carpoolers in India are women. Carpooling as an idea has gained ground in the country," Quick Ride said in a statement.

According to the platform, Kerala has the highest women carpooling ratio at 51 per cent on Quick Ride while Bengaluru has the highest carpooling rides in a day.

Other active women carpooling cities on the platform are Bengaluru (45 per cent), Pune (42 per cent) and Chennai (40 per cent).

"Road and public transport infrastructure in our cities are overwhelmed and there is a desperate need to have complementary forms of mass transportation systems in place to ease the burden. Carpooling is being recognised as a viable form," said Quick Ride Chief Executive and Co-founder K.N.M. Rao.

Rao said by not adding new vehicles, cities will benefit through affordability, lesser emissions, reduced traffic congestion and increased connectivity through carpooling as means of transport.

Founded in 2014, Quick Ride facilities a meeting point between vehicle owners and people looking for a ride.

Monetary transactions occur between vehicle owners and ride takers while Quick Ride also makes a small cut for platform services.
