Bangalore: Over 80,000 Autos Off Roads on Oct 12

Bangalore, Oct 12, (DHNS): Commuters, brace up for hardship on Monday. More than 80,000 autorickshaws will go off the City roads in view of a strike from 6 am to 6 pm.

Supported by almost all major auto drivers’ unions here, the dawn-to-dusk protest strike will affect people, especially those who have to reach railway stations, the Kempegowda bus station and other satellite bus terminals. To make up for the inconvenience, the BMTC will ply 100-150 extra buses, apart from regular schedules in various parts of the City.

Adarsha Auto and Taxi Driver’s Union president M Manjunath said: “We are going on strike to protest the decision of the government to have autorickshaws change their black-body-and-yellow-top colour combination to green and yellow. It will cost us Rs 12,000 per auto, which is not viable.

“Drivers and unions are also against the government order to make digital meters compulsory. We want the order cancelled.”

While the change of color is unnecessary, the shift to digital meters is very much the need of the hour. Though the digital meters are not completely fool proof, it will reduce meter tampering to a great extent. Also, the autorickshaw drivers should undergo attitude correction and etiquette training. Drivers who misbehave or charge extra must be fined heavily and for serious offences, the permit and licence should be cancelled. It is sad to note there are only a few conscientious auto drivers left in bangalore.
