Sex Workers Donate for Karnataka's Flood Victims' Relief

Bangalore, Oct 12 (IANS) A group of sex workers in Karnataka Monday donated Rs.50,000 to help north Karnataka flood victims, a move that prompted Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa to say the gesture is worth Rs.50 crore (Rs.500 million).

"Thank you, friends," Yeddyurappa said accepting the cheque at a function where sex workers inaugurated a centre they will run with the help of UNAIDS and an NGO to prevent spread of HIV-AIDS.

"This amount has come from the marginisalised section of the society. I am hugely touched. This is not just Rs 50,000, but is more than Rs.50 crore for the flood victims," Yeddyurappa told sex workers.

"I promise to return this kind gesture in future," he added.

Yeddyurappa went on 'padyatra' (foot march) last week in different parts of Bangalore to raise funds for rehabilitation of over a million people who were left homeless due to rains and flash floods in 15 of the state's 19 districts. The drive has raised around Rs.700 crore.

Yeddyurappa was present at the inauguration of the Ashodaya Academy, a regional centre on HIV-AIDS to be run by the sex workers themselves to prevent the spread of the disease.

Though the centre is located in Mysore, about 140 km from here, the inaugural ceremony was held in Bangalore.

"At a time when the entire state is mourning the death and devastation caused by floods in north Karnataka, the sex workers who are part of our organisation have contributed the money," said Bhagyalakshmi, secretary of Ashodaya Samiti.

Mr Haneef Belthangady, Yes I agree with you and Islam forbids such earnings and benefits. Having said that their contribution has caught the attention when they donated the money in a forum and in the form of a cheque. If they had donated hard cash in to the collection box this would not have been come to known. Same way these sex workers put monies in to the hundi boxes placed in temples/churches/dargahs, which is quietly received by the trustees and they dont air their difference of opinion then.

Dear Yeddi, please do something for these sex workers and their expoliters. They are the one profoundly abused and most insecure in the society as they dont have families of their own. For them sex is a profession and not a sacred act. Yeddi, please please try to rehabilitate them. I am sure by this act you would seek God's pleasure. These sex workers have not gone there out of their free will but they were pushed and forced into this profession. Poor ladies. Has any government ever since 1947 worked for the eradication and upliftment of these sex workers and sex industry.

It is good that the Chief Minister appreciated receiving the donation for the flood victims from the sex workers. In return, I hope he will instruct the police all over the State NOT to trouble and/or arrest these forgotten citizens.

Donations everybody can make, but every body cannot take benefits from such a donations. Since we know the money or the wealth from wrong way (Halal or Haram). In some of the religions there are a rules and regulations to accept such benefits. In some of the religions sex work is not allowed and earning from that way is also not accepted. Choice from you people.

These sex workers contributed really everything they had. Definitely it has really pained them when contributing to the flood victims cause. But their sacrifice has been appreciated by CM which is really good administrator's job. Wish this type of wisdom prevail with our CM.
