Udupi, Oct 27: State primary and secondary education minister, Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, warned the parents that unless they ensure that their children get education coupled with refinement in life, the parents will have to live in old age homes in their later life.

He was speaking after inaugurating the silver jubilee celebrations of V K R Acharya Memorial High School and Brahmavar zonal level 'Pratibha Karanji' programme on Monday October 26.

"The parents are providing to their children, an education that teaches them how to earn money. This education makes them capable of making money, but does not teach them any refinement. The parents, instead of forcing upon their choice of education on their wards, need to identify the fields of interest of their children and encourage them to pursue them," he said. He asked the people to understand that a good society can be formed only when it has people of different professions, like lawyers, scientists, engineers, agriculturists, teachers etc.

On this occasion, Dubai Megha Farm director, Dr B K Yousuf, and Udyavar Halima Sabju Trust president, Haji Abdul Jaleel, who have donated to V K Acharya Memorial High School, were honoured.

MLA K Raghupati Bhat presided. MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary, zilla panchayat member, B Bhujanga Shetty, and various other dignitaries were present.

Block education officer, S Vasant Shetty, welcomed. Head master, B Santosh Kumar Shetty, delivered introductory address. Teacher, B Balagangadhara Shetty, proposed vote of thanks.

Speaking to reporters later, Kageri said that the government has decided to reduce the number of multi-choice questions for SSLC from the earlier 60 to 25,  from this year onwards. He also said that his department has envisaged taluk tour for the students of classes up to fifth standard, district tour for students up to seventh standard and state tour for the students of above seventh standard, to make them aware about the rich heritage and tourism spots of their own state.  He asked the officials to attract students to the government-run schools by imparting quality education, pointing out that in spite of offering bicycles, uniforms, books, hot meals etc., more and more students choose to get admitted into private schools because of lack of quality teaching in government schools.
