Mangalore, Oct 29: Rev Hannibal Cabral informed at a press conference held in the city on Wednesday October 28, that the completion of 175 years of Basel Mission in India will be celebrated in the city on Friday October 30. The inaugural is slated to be held at 9.15 am at Karnataka Theological College, Balmatta in the city.

As part of the celebrations, an exhibition titled ‘Chitra Vaibhava’ will be organized at the said college premises in the city on that day. The exhibition will showcase about 1000 rare photographs taken between the year 1840 to 1940 AD, covering our land, letter, religion and culture and also a collection of Basel Mission publications, both in Kannada and Tulu. The timings of the exhibition, which is open for public viewing from October 30 to November 8, will be from 10 am to 1 pm, and from 4 pm to 8 pm on all days.

A thanksgiving mass will be organized at Shanti Cathedral at 10 am. Valedictory ceremony will be held from 3 pm to 7 pm. Karnataka Southern Diocese Bishop, Rt Rev Dr J S Sadanand, will preside. Special guests from Germany will take part in the ceremony. At the ceremony, the services rendered by the missionaries will be remembered, he explained.

Rev Edwin Walter and Dr Anil Kumar were present at the press conference.

UDUPI: President of UBMC District Board for Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu districts, Rev Jeevan Prasad, informed at a press conference on Wednesday October 28 that celebrations connected with the completion of 175 years by the Basel missionaries in India will be celebrated on November 1.

He revealed that this service-oriented organization, set up at Basel in Germany, came to India on October 30, 1834. He reminded that Basel Mission had published the earliest English-Tulu dictionary and Tulu grammar book.

The celebration will be held at UBMC Church here. Various programmes including special mass from 9 am onwards, will be organized, he stated.

Basel Mission Trust advisor J W Ammanna, Rev Vijay Kumar, Francis Kotian and Ronald Manohar Udyavar were present.

Is there anyway that I can track a person by the surname of Soans who originally came from Switzerland, in the late 1800's, worked with the Basel Mission Church, married a Hindu Brahmin lady, and settled in Mangalore. Information kindly provided please, such as the dates of birth and marriage, and also places, would be dearly appreciated. Failing this, is it possible if someone could kindly point me in the right direction, in either procuring the documents from the archives or viewing them online.....Sorry, I know it was a very long time ago, and it will be a Herculean task. The Reason: Trying to trace my father's family's ancestry. Close cousins tell me that the original Soans came from Germany with the Basel Mission Church. Many thanks. Richard L Soans

Its not surprising to know the success behind every Daiji news. Its always something special, something very creative and dedication and passion behind this. What I like about you guys, is that you put in your heart and soul to everything that you do. Keep up the good work and May God bless you. While at the same time, I have a suggestion to make. Why dont you take up the initiative to invite all our dear readers to share beautiful old photos they may have of undivided Dakshina Kannada. Old photos that will show the beauty of our dear place.

The sacrifice rendered by the Basel Missionaries is really commendable, they have given their life for the welfare of our people.if we visit the symmetry u will know that many germans died at a vry early age of 25, who died without any proper medical facility, but they did not hesitate to provide the fcility to us people. as commented by many of u earlier, our education systm is excellent as compared to other states or regions within karnataka. May god bless the families who died for us and I pray that all their hardwork does not go in vain. let us all preserve the treasures given by them to us.

The people of India, especially in the South we have high literacy, and a high standard of living, when compared to some other states of India. When we look back, it was due to the contributions from foreign missionaries of various Christian denominations. To name them, there are many, but we must remeber with a grateful heart the fruits we enjoy is due to their call and sacrifice. Count the educational and medical institutions in Mangalore alone, which was started by various Christian Missions! Thank God, those people responded to the challenge of Jesus Christ " Ye are the salt of the earth". Mathew 5:13

Beautifully chosen photographs....I am sure every modern day child will be pleased to see the traditional "Tandlasho Mudo" which was the unit for transactions for buying and selling rice (with subunits being Sher and Pavu.....) The Basel Mission community also has contributed some great men to the social life of Mangalore....like Denzil Karkada, Clarence Hary, Godwyn Weltha and Neethi just to name a few.The choirs of Shanti Church used to be perhaps the best I've ever heard all my life. One very unique incident I will never forget is, that one of my neighbors during my childhood was suddenly asked to vacate his house by the landlord....but the Balmatta Church authorities promptly gave him small piece of land and money to build a house and save the family with many children from disaster. While I thank Daijiworld for this great report, will be grateful if you could kindly name the ghat road which is seen in photograph number 3.(Or was it part of good old Kadri market-Nantoor road..???)...Just curious
