Mangalore: Basel Mission's 175 Years in India - Special Photo Exhibition

Mangalore, Oct 29: Rev Hannibal Cabral informed at a press conference held in the city on Wednesday October 28, that the completion of 175 years of Basel Mission in India will be celebrated in the city on Friday October 30. The inaugural is slated to be held at 9.15 am at Karnataka Theological College, Balmatta in the city.
As part of the celebrations, an exhibition titled ‘Chitra Vaibhava’ will be organized at the said college premises in the city on that day. The exhibition will showcase about 1000 rare photographs taken between the year 1840 to 1940 AD, covering our land, letter, religion and culture and also a collection of Basel Mission publications, both in Kannada and Tulu. The timings of the exhibition, which is open for public viewing from October 30 to November 8, will be from 10 am to 1 pm, and from 4 pm to 8 pm on all days.
A thanksgiving mass will be organized at Shanti Cathedral at 10 am. Valedictory ceremony will be held from 3 pm to 7 pm. Karnataka Southern Diocese Bishop, Rt Rev Dr J S Sadanand, will preside. Special guests from Germany will take part in the ceremony. At the ceremony, the services rendered by the missionaries will be remembered, he explained.

UDUPI: President of UBMC District Board for Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu districts, Rev Jeevan Prasad, informed at a press conference on Wednesday October 28 that celebrations connected with the completion of 175 years by the Basel missionaries in India will be celebrated on November 1.
He revealed that this service-oriented organization, set up at Basel in Germany, came to India on October 30, 1834. He reminded that Basel Mission had published the earliest English-Tulu dictionary and Tulu grammar book.
The celebration will be held at UBMC Church here. Various programmes including special mass from 9 am onwards, will be organized, he stated.
Basel Mission Trust advisor J W Ammanna, Rev Vijay Kumar, Francis Kotian and Ronald Manohar Udyavar were present.
