Puttur, Nov 9:
The taluk-level Tulu folklore games meet was held at Government Pre-University College, Uppinangady, near here on Sunday November 8.  It was held as part of Vishwa Tulu Sammelan to be held in December.

Former zilla panchayat (ZP) president B Sankappa Rai inaugurated the folklore games meet. Speaking on the occasion, Sankappa Rai said that it is commendable the way in which Sri Kshetra Dharmastala dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade has been striving to foster Tulu, language of Tulunadu and its distinct traditions and culture in this age of globalization.

Rai called on all Tulu natives of undivided Dakshina Kannada (DK) district regardless of caste, creed and religion to attend the Vishwa Tulu Sammelan.

Heggade said that Vishwa Tulu Sammelan is organized to alleviate inferiority complex among people to converse in Tulu in everyday living. He hoped that sammelan would bolster the pride of conversing in Tulu across the undivided DK district, he emphasized. Vishwa Tulu Sammelan should have positive impact on the youth, who in turn will pass on the fragrance of the language to the future generations, he added.

Savanoor Sitaram Rai presided. ZP member Shayana Jayanand, former MLA Shakunthala Shetty, Gundya Annayya Gowda, Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) director Hari, Dr Raghu Bellippady and Fr Avens John were present.

Tulu folklore games meet president Dhanya Kumar Rai Biliyoorguttu delivered the introductory address. Secretary Niranjan Rai Matanthabettu welcomed the gathering.

The exhibition of Tulunadu folklore accessories, complete with miniature traditional cowshed, open well, Tulsikatte and several other agricultural tools that were widely used by peasants in Tulunadu were displayed at the venue. The delicacies of contemporary Tulunadu too got a significant place in the folklore games meet.

The articles displayed, events organized are great, remind me of my childhood Tulu speaking friends. Only regret that the organizers could have invited leaders from other communities as well. After all, great Tulunad belongs to all in Tulunad.
