Bantwal: Villagers Block Efforts to Demolish ‘Brahma Sannidhi’

Daijiworld Media Network – Bantwal (SP)

Bantwal, Nov 11: Although the employees of the company executing the work of widening the highway between Mangalore and B C Road came equipped with labourers, tippers and backhoes on Tuesday November 10 to demolish the ‘Brahma Sannidhi’ at Brahmarakootlu near here, located by the side of the national highway 48, the villagers succeeded in persuading them to go back.

After this incident, the locals along with the people’s representatives of the region, met and decided after prolonged discussions, to stage a highway blockade at Brahmarakootlu on Wednesday November 11, to register their protest against the move to raze the shrine dedicated to Lord Brahma.

Originally, the National Highway Authority of India had drafted a plan to build a road after demolishing the shrine, which is located adjacent to the road, below the road level. Later, modifications were done to the plan, and a small piece of land was required for widening the road on the opposite side of the shrine. However, an executive engineer recently posted to oversee the works, has been insisting on executing the works as per original plan, the people said.

Reportedly, the district deputy commissioner had asked the officials to widen the highway in a way that does not endanger the existence of this shrine. The people want to register their protest and pressurize the concerned to ammend the plans and save ‘Brahmasannidhi’, which they claim, is one of the handful of places of worship dedicated to Lord Brahma in the country.

Please respect peoples culture and tradition on their private land. The shrine has a special meaning for the local people, so any decision should be taken only with their concurrence. Lydia, you are referring to encroachment. Encroachment is wrong and any land encroached, the government has the right to take it back. A lot of people encroach on government land by setting up a place of worship which they then claim the Government cannot destroy.

This is a common tactic used by the real estate mafia to encroach on Government land. If this place is private property then the Government has to respect the rights of the owners, if it is public land that was encroached then it is a different story. I am all for respecting private land rights, private land is private land and the Government has no business forcing people out of private land using the alibi of development or anything else.

But encroached land is governments land and no private person or a group should be allowed to use religion or otherwise to encroach and snatch it. I hope in this case it is not a encroachment.

The govt. evicts people from their livelihood earning places in the name of development, for the welfare of a few people. I think a better way would be to bring together all the belivers of this particular place along with Vedic Scholars to assist in taking a right decision instead of creating hurdles in 4 lane widening work.

This place is built by men & could be transferred with proper vedic rituals, so that all will benefit. If people are stubborn then build a bridge over the place, so it is left intact, but would be tresspassed by vehicles over it. Give the choice to the people. Lets us not bring politics in everything. Contact Modi like Lydia has mentioned.

Very simple solution. If the shrine can be relocated to the agreed side, then it is much better. Otherwise extent the road on the other side leaving the shrine. So everybody will be happy. After all road is for people.

Pathetic indeed. Satish, Kallianpur, my stand is still same. No religion should come in the way of development nor cause public incovenience.

Development should go according to local, social, culture issues not according to what engineer's plans are. definitely plan can be modified and peoples choice agreed to.

It is obvious all religion will respond like this when it comes to Mandir, Masjid or Church. Why are you blaming Hindu’s for this. It’s the Church people who are making peoples like miserable in kallianpur for the Pathway also. The road which goes from kallianpur main road to Moodabettu is closed at 8:00PM by Church people, this is called pathetic.

Please wake up, please allow at least a space to ride rickshaw, may be you will have to reduce little playing ground size which will not harm anyway to anyone, but will help too many people including Christians.

I appreciate Gujarat CM Modi in this case. He ignored any kind protests when development was his motive. He demolished Mandir/Masjid/Church alike when it came in the way. People decide - how different will be your worship if the shrine is shifted from where it is now ?
