Bangalore: Govt to Rein in Overloaded Trucks

Bangalore, Nov 12: The state government has decided to adopt a new technology known as ‘weigh in motion,’ to determine weight of the vehicles while they are moving, in main roads and highways across the state, to detect offenders of norms and to levy fines on them.

Giving this information at a press conference held in the city on Wednesday November 11, state transport minister, R Ashok, felt that this will enable the government to regulate the trucks, mainly those carrying ore, sand and other things, which carry more than the prescribed loads. He revealed that during the special drive launched by his department in the last two weeks, thousands of vehicles were found to violate the rules. The department has collected about five crore rupees by way of fines from overloaded vehicles during this time, he explained.

To permanently stop recurrence of this irregularity, Ashok said, this technology will be installed in 18 important highways in the state. “Because of the movement of the heavily loaded vehicles, the roads get damaged and the government has to undertake repetitive repairs. The work of identifying such roads is in progress. This technology will be adopted in Bellary district roads too,” he said.

He clarified that the government has decided to take back the condition of painting the auto rickshaws green, because of the bitter opposition of the auto rickshaw drivers. However, the companies have been asked by the government to paint all the new auto rickshaws with green paint. At the same time, the government will not go back from the condition of fixing digital meters to the autos, and cancellation of permits of two-stroke auto rickshaws,” he revealed.
