Udupi, Nov 17: The paddy crop that was harvested and left in the fields, has been  damaged due to the unexpected rains that have lashed undivided Dakshina Kannada district over the past few days including the night of Monday November 16.

The harvested paddy is submerged in knee-deep water in the fields and the peasants are finding it difficult to carry them home.  The peasants who have toiled for all these months are distressed at the havoc caused by the rains.

The peasants were overjoyed when their paddy crop was ready for harvesting and now have to face hardships.

Much of the crop is already withered and unfit for making rice at the mill.  It has drained their hopes and resources which will take many months to recover since some of the peasants have borrowed heavily to meet the expenses related to farming.

Veteran agriculturists say though it has rained during the harvest season in the past, there have never been such strong rains. If the paddy is widely damaged in the predominantly agriculture-based undivided Dakshina Kannada district, it is likely to cause scarcity of staple food.

The farming community has voiced its concern over the lack of response by people’s representatives and also the state administration over their plight.

The peasants are also aggrieved at the administration as it has been focused on the flood relief measures that are underway in the Uttar Karnataka.

They feel that the effort to help out flood victims in Uttar Karnataka by the local social service and voluntary organizations has left the farming community high and dry in their struggle to salvage their damaged crop.

The damp crop is now of substandard quality and unfit for consumption. It can only be used as cattle feed.

Hence, the farming community seeks the administration’s support in their time of need.

I am unable to understand Asha's mode of thinking, maybe she has not understood what Lilly is trying to say. As we had paddy field's it is very hard labour specially when it turn's cloudy and your paddy is been put to dry in the sun,its a time for every one in the houshold to shift the paddy grains into the house.Even small children will have to help.

state admin. is busy in relief activity, because there is a pure ghee available and this is the time they can make and save some money for thier future. why they will listen to paddy field people, where they are not going to get anything, if central release funds, for paddy field, then state admn is ready to help you may be 10% of released fund for distribution to general public and balance to their pocket. Dear Asha, I am not sure what was so offensive in Lily Lobo's comment? All she was trying to say was, even though her family is not in the paddy growing business, its heart breaking to see the destruction of all that crop. I am not hear to start an email war but just did not understand the offense. Please elaborate what was so offensive? Is'nt it sad to see all the crops destroyed after all that hard labor by the poor people? do you think they will get paid like your farmers in London? And Lydia is right, the MF politician voltures are waiting for this moment to capitalize at the expense of the poor. Just India as a country has risen from the centuries of western loot, I am sure these poor people will be able to stand up some day and defend themselves. Have a good day.

Can all of us sincerely turn to our God and repent to Him for our misdeeds and injustice we have done to our own fellow beings, our own brothers and sisters and our own parents. If there is no food available, what money can do. Wealth earned thru illegal measns has no use. These are just jolts from God and warning to human kind. Beware, dont look for scientifc reasonings. Just mend your behaviour and attitude so that God shows mercy on us or face destruction. Khuda ke paas dher hai magar andhera hargiz nahin.

What has happened is very unfortunate. The farmers' loss is nation's loss because there will be less produce in the market, food may need to be imported hence the prices will shoot up. However, how much can the authorities do ? On the other day I saw a Uttar Karnataka lady weeping for she had no place to accommodate her EIGHT children and was complaining that the govt has not done anything yet. Whereas, the Govt. is taxing the rich to help the poor. How much one can do ? Upon that our politicians pounce on anything that is approved for the poor. It is too disgusting.
