Kannada TV channel slapped notice for telecasting fake news about PM Modi

Bengaluru, Apr 16 (IANS): The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has asked Kannada news channel Public TV why it should not be taken off air for telecasting a misleading bulletin which said Prime Minister Narendra Modi will rain money from helicopters, an official said on Thursday.

"That programme said Modi will drop money from helicopter. It was totally misleading and so many people in the villages are waiting and sitting outside," Press Information Bureau Additional Director General Nagendra Swamy told IANS.

Swamy said he has served a notice to the television channel as per the rules and questioned the channel why it should not be taken off air.

"On April 15, 2020, your news channel Public TV broadcast an item, Helicopter Money – ‘Helicopternalli surithara Modi' at 8:30 p.m., which is false, mischievous and deliberate and clearly violates the broadcasting code and rules," Swamy said in his notice.

He questioned the news channel why it was spreading false information, creating panic and social unrest when the whole country is fighting Covid-19.

"In view of the above serious violation of Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, and rules framed there under, you are hereby directed to show cause why your channel should not be taken out of air immediately," said the notice.

Swamy has given the channel 10 days' time to reply.

"Helicopter Money" is very liberal term used in economics; the only thing is this channel sensationalized it too much, which made it look like a news item! But is our public so naive to think that money will be dropped freely from the skies? Ice & live fish dropping from the skies r well known phenomena though!

    My dear friends,

These TV news channels are nothing but "fantasies". If you really want to believe in news, then go for online news sources like Daijiworld, because these online news channels are totally genuine as well as reliable ones.

Nowadays, the trend of seeing these news channels has gone down due to the awareness among the TV viewers as well as the spread of Internet across the globe. As a result, you will be seeing lot of online news readers as compared to TV news channels. I know such TV news channels who are eager to spread such rumours as they are paid channels.

I urge you all, if you don't have a proper access to Internet and are eager to watch news on TV, go for NDTV broadcasted in English!

What's wrong if one more fake news during this time. People are used to this type of news and take it as an entertainment from the joker hero of this news article. If only had PM given heed to Rahul Gandhi's advice to distribute emergency ration cards to the needy this news wouldn't have been telecast.

'Helicopter money' is a common term in economics. It refers to the govt printing more notes than its economic reserves, its a common practice in failing countries. The channel may have said it in a sensational way but only persons with no knowledge of economics will misunderstand, and that is not the channels fault, it probably consulted an economist.

Gabriel - Are you serious or are you thinking et al? Due to rumor mongering and false news innocent people have to bear immense sufferings and disappointment. What the DG did is absolutely right.. in fact they should immediately shut operations of such news channel until a public apology and statement from such new channel is not obtained and broadcasted in big letters.. Such a shameful way to telecast wrong information..
