Mangaluru: District administration in quandary as locals oppose cremation of coronavirus casualty

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (SB)

Mangaluru, Apr 24: Confusion and anxiety was all over the place late evening on Thursday, April 23, as the district administration could not cremate the mortal remains of the second victim of coronavirus in the district due to strict opposition from locals.

It may be recalled, Dakshina Kannada on Thursday, recorded its second death due to novel coronavirus. The deceased was a 75-year-old woman from Bantwal. She was the mother-in-law of the coronavirus patient from Bantwal who passed away earlier on April 19.

Large number of local in most parts of the city demanded that the body be cremated somewhere else, as the deceased died of coronavirus infection. They remained resolute in their stand, even after police intervention.

The district administration first shifted the body of the deceased to Bolur burial ground. Before officials could reach the spot, locals gathered in large numbers and showed strict opposition to the burial. Later, the district administration planned to cremate the body at Pachanady burial ground. When local MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty came to know about the same, he along with many locals including ladies and children, gathered in front of burial ground’s gate. On behalf of the locals, the MLA strongly opposed the burial of the body at Pachanady burial ground which falls under his constituency. He took into task the police commissioner and district health authorities for bringing the body to his constituency without his knowledge. Finding no other way, the officials had to take the body back to Wenlock hospital.

Soon after, rumours were afloat that officials are planning to cremate the body in any one of the burial lands in city limits. Soon, large number of locals living near Shakthinagar, Moodshedde, Padavinangadi, Sajipa and Kanchinadka burial grounds, came out to protest and prevent the burial. People gathered at the burial grounds till late night and failed to maintain social distance as they clearly violated lockdown rules completely.

Human body or any Caracas once burnt , it wont contaminate/ pollute the earth. But educated people from Mangalore, not allowed to cremate the dead person from Bantwal.

Even Italy followed the cremation method to Christian/Catholics. Sealed in wooden box the dead bodies cremated by 24 x7. But our great MLA who is Doctor by profession could not understand the this.

Just read that the cremation took place late last night near Bantwal ,with the help of local MLA,Rajesh Naik.
Sri Naik,it is gathered offered the place behind his house for cremation
stating that she as member from his constituency deserved that much.It is learnt
that the DK administration was stunned on hearing this from Sri Naik !However the cremation was conducted at a different place.
My respect and salutations to Sri.Rajesh Naik.
The people of Bantwal have indeed elected s TRUE leader and should be proud of him.

We can understand the peoples worry about corona spreading.
Our news papers and media taught more of fear about corona spreading than the real life scenario and solutions. People are not educated well about to think about situation like the one happened.
In such circumstances, dead body can be buried deeper within their respective property(if they have enough place to bury). I think bantwal people have enough own land. This is my opinion.

    1. There are clear guidelines given by WHO. So the district admin should and is following the protocol.
    2. During medical emergencies, it is the administration which has the power.
    3. When dead bodies undergo decomposition, this virus will be gone in a few days. There is no question(scientifically) of its infecting people.

    4. What is more.worrying are those.pople going in 2 wheelers not wearing helmets, speeding, spitting on the roads etc.
    5. I think.the administration should.use force if need.be to silence these protesters.
    6. Have a.clear cut ordinance as to where the bodies will be cremated as there is bound to be an increase in the.coming.months. we will be duty bound.to follow.

We still consider it a good deed, work that will please the divine to help families who have lost their dear one. Some do it even if they are in no way connected or related to the deceased ! What a turn around ! Seems like we have educate on humanity regarding helping even those who are dead ...Very strange times we are living in !

People should understand that Coronavirus disease is not a short term phenomenon and will stay longer. As said by someone it will belike influenza or TB. Are we not burying TB patients today. So more people will die in the future if not this year or later. It is time our administration and the local representative make people understand the burial/cremation of the dead will not affect them and not politicize the issue for personal gains

Isn't burial safe choice than keeping the body at the hospital for longer time? The leaders we elect are quick to take credit for everything, but when there is a problem , can't provide a solution and wants to wash their hands off. Dear RSRB, your commentt is not at all appreciable and inhuman. When WHO had given clear protocol for COVID 19 burial of cremation procedures, being a elected representative of Surathkal and also well educated MLA Doctor Bharath Shetty, looks illiterate here, he has to convince their people about pros and cons, not favoring anybody. Also it is a District Administration has to take a strong stand and do it. Please think about your own family member dies and face the same situation, at least died person must get a decent burial. Please see an example of Bantwal MLA Rajesh Naik, even though they are far, he had given a space just behind his house for the burial. Hats off to him. Death if inevitable but we educated human beings must act in a responsible way.

But one can not blame the common man ..Soo much fear is instilled among us now its natural to be worried .. There is a need to explain the facts .Sonebody needs to do that .. We have Doctors who are elected representatives .. They need to be more clear in thier views ..My heart goes out for this family .. Two innocent women of a single family become the victims of this deadly Virus .. iam sure they were those strong women who contributed a lot for thier healthy families and society in general .. Many people may opt to cremate the body of relatives instead of burial esp. in such circumstances. Some respect to the dead is required, you cannot take the body around the city, it is an insult .Are there no protocols to be followed?
