Mangaluru: Dam water enough for summer, no worry of rationing

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Apr 28: The vented dam at Thumbe built across River Netravati on which the city is dependent for its water needs has water level of 5.51 metres now as against its maximum level of six metres. As such, the worry over summer water shortage has been warded off. As per the estimate, the water storage in Thumbe and AMR dams will be sufficient for the city till June 5.

In contrast, water level in Thumbe vented dam had started to show marked slump since mid-March last year. From April onward, water rationing was resorted to.

To augment the water level in the Thumbe dam, standing water from AMR dam was released on April 15 and the maximum level of six metres was achieved. Since the last some days, catchment areas of River Netravati have been getting rainfall. Therefore, the Nekkilady vented dam which supplies water to Puttur city has been overflowing. Water level at the AMR dam, which has a storage level of four metres now, is therefore likely to rise further. As such, the current level of water will be sufficient till June 5, the officials say.

City corporation commissioner Ajith Kumar Hegde Shanadi, said that the current water storage in Thumbe vented dam would be sufficient for the city for about a month. He said that as per the current estimate, there will not be any shortfall of water and if needed, additional water can be got from the AMR dam.

We should not be having problem this summer, like now we are not having any load shedding of electricity. Hostels, hotels, construction projects ,clubs are closed so there is less consumption of water.

Although enough water is available in the dam, supply to our area is erratic. Yesterday we got water after 3 days. Does it mean that water is released to areas where influential people are staying!! I hope the concerned authorities will look into this issue and provide us water at least once in 2 days!!

    Oswald,

Each and every house has either underground sump or a syntax in which the water, whenever it comes, gets stored. If you are waiting for the water to come and you do washing/cooking/bathing, you will keep complaining all your life. Because, most of the times, the water comes at night time, not day.

The higher storage of water is due to the COVID effect. This year the biggest industrial consumer of water in the region MRPL was closed due to coronavirus and due to this, the upstream water was conserved.

Last year also MRPL was shut due to shortage of water , So MRPL and other industries are the major guzzlers of water and need to be controlled during summer.

MRPL has a dedicated pipeline coming from Sarapady dam. They have instructions to share their stock when Thumbe dam falls short of water.

We should give a big thanks to the lockdown that water consumption has come down drastically due to complete closure of water intensive businesses like hospitality, realty, & others; just imagine the water levels if all these businesses were operating in full swing!!

Good time to plan for next year!!

Please stop politicising issues... Use ur head if u have... Water levels depend as per the usage and no political party has control over it... Today constructions havecstopped, so have hotels, schools, industries, companies, etc... Today even if Congress was in power the water levels would have been higher.. what do u think they were putting a straw into the dam and drinking water 24*7???

seriously.. now you don't want to talk politics rest of the time even if a dog bark u guys relate it to PM. The water level doesn't drop unless it released to the sea. More water was released to sea to help sand mafias during congress periods. we know whats the truth.

What collects at the bottom of a dam is silt and if it's not emptied the space to hold water is reduced. To remove this collection, the dam got to be emptied ?? If it's not emptied into the sea, where else do you expect it to go ? Engineers working in relevant department do this work. If Congress was in power during one such operation, does it mean that the party leader took the silt home ?

Somebody said it right. Use it IF you have !
