Mangaluru, Apr 28: The vented dam at Thumbe built across River Netravati on which the city is dependent for its water needs has water level of 5.51 metres now as against its maximum level of six metres. As such, the worry over summer water shortage has been warded off. As per the estimate, the water storage in Thumbe and AMR dams will be sufficient for the city till June 5.

In contrast, water level in Thumbe vented dam had started to show marked slump since mid-March last year. From April onward, water rationing was resorted to.

To augment the water level in the Thumbe dam, standing water from AMR dam was released on April 15 and the maximum level of six metres was achieved. Since the last some days, catchment areas of River Netravati have been getting rainfall. Therefore, the Nekkilady vented dam which supplies water to Puttur city has been overflowing. Water level at the AMR dam, which has a storage level of four metres now, is therefore likely to rise further. As such, the current level of water will be sufficient till June 5, the officials say.

City corporation commissioner Ajith Kumar Hegde Shanadi, said that the current water storage in Thumbe vented dam would be sufficient for the city for about a month. He said that as per the current estimate, there will not be any shortfall of water and if needed, additional water can be got from the AMR dam.
