Mangaluru: DK administration dispatches 1,100 workers to hometowns

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Apr 29: The Dakshina Kannada (DK) district administration at last succeeded in sending away migrant workers who were in Mangaluru to their hometowns by buses on Wednesday, April 29.

Buses had been arranged to various districts of north Karnataka from near the Town Hall here. As many as 1,100 workers boarded 37 buses and travelled to their places.

On Tuesday, hundreds of workers from different parts of the district had congregated in the city. They had crowded the Town Hall area. Under the leadership of city corporation commissioner Ajith Kumar Hegde, arrangements had been made to send them to their villages. These workers will be reaching their homes by today evening.

Still, there has been a steady inflow of migrant workers to the Town Hall. Noting this, deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh, has instructed the workers not to gather at the Town Hall. She said that travel arrangement for the migrant workers would be made as per the government instructions and that preparations are under way to send them to either their homes or to places of their work as the case may be.

The deputy commissioner has asked the migrant workers to stay where they are put up now. She said that local officials will put together information from respective wards and thereafter the workers would be informed about the travel arrangement. She warned that action will be initiated against contractors if they bring migrant workers to the city for sending them to their hometowns. She also stated that such people will be acted against by the police too.

We r very very reactive to a large nmbr of issues. Migrant labourers issue was one that the Govt of Ktaka could have looked at right at the beginning. They r tvlng back to their native, Did anyone ask WHY?? No food, no money in hand. No food is the failure of dist admin, no plans in place. When things r settling down, send them home, WHY?? They r likely to spread d CV coz of their dwelling methods and avoiding Social Distancing. Is North Karnataka free of COVID to send them back?? Someone should tell them, if they go back to their natives, they cannot travel back for earning their livelihood for next 4/6 months. Very sad, no one to explain them why they have to stay back. Those who stay, will hav lot of work to do. But those who leave cannot come back or may be never come back. I have done my best to create awareness and have succeeded to some extent. God bless all.

Great work by DK administration. Still, other than migrant workers, there are people from other places/cities/districts who are stuck in Mangalore City, had come to Mangalore with their personal work and couldn't go back to their native cities and staying in friends or relatives home, due to lockdown. Will there be any arrangements for them as well ? Provided they can be kept in quarantine once they reach to their places .

As usual my views are contraian.I feel that all the unfinished works like roads, drains footpaths could have been completed well before monsoon. The migrants would have earned money ,and during lockdown as there is no traffic, nobody would be disturbed. Of course admin has to provide them with stay and food. Also as the work is in an open environment the chances of catching the virus would be practically absent.National Environmental Engineering Research Institute has reported that with increase summer heat the infection rate has come down ,the scientific reason being , virus requires an ideal temperature and humidity to survive.
