Bengaluru, May 8: State minister for primary and secondary education, S Suresh Kumar, has instructed the officials in his department to bring down the syllabus as chances of the academic year beginning on time has been dim because of chaos crated by coronavirus infection.

He discussed the matter at a meeting of senior officials of the department here and asked them to redraft the syllabus to suit the reduced academic period. He noted that it is impossible to take any decision before the new academic year actually begins. "Therefore, we must begin the work of identifying the syllabus that can be deemed as extraneous. We should calculate the number of days the classes might be held, and suitably change the syllabus so that it does not become a burden for the students. We can drop unnecessary and repetitive syllabus and retain only those lessons that are necessary. Towards this end, we should draw an action plan," he told the ministers.

Kumar also wanted the officials to prepare an action plan as per which lessons on coronavirus infection, which is a pandemic that harmed the current academic year, should be added in the curriculum. The lessons can have information about the virus, steps needed to be undertaken to avoid the infection etc. They should be so prepared that it becomes interesting for the respective age groups to study. He said that the lessons should be concise and it should be mandatory to study them. Teachers should also be trained on this issue," he advised. The minister also said that education department should own responsibility of creating an environment of study in school where distance is maintained. He said that an action plan on alternative ways to achieve this should be drawn up.

Suresh Kumar said that the Makkalavani YouTube created by the department has gained nation-wide attention. He asked the officials to select good teachers in both English and Kannada mediums from first to tenth standards subject-wise and lesson-wise, record the teachings and upload the same to YouTube.
