Bengaluru: Various organizations urge CM Yediyurappa to close liquor shops in state

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, May 10: Several organizations have urged chief minister B S Yediyurappa to close liquor shops in the state, citing health concerns and spike in cases of violence since their reopening.

Liquor shops in the state that reopened last week saw brisk business with scores of people queuing up to stock up on alcohol. The state's economy received a boost with Rs 45 crore worth of business on the very first day, but since the opening of the liquor stores, cases of drunken brawls and violence have been reported, and there has been a surge of coronavirus cases too.

"It is not right on the part of the state government to have opened the liquor shops in order to earn revenue. They have to be closed immediately," urged enviornment experts, leaders of education, farmers, progressive and Dalit organizations in an appeal that was sent to CM B S Yediyurappa.

The letter written to the CM by the organizations states, "Lacs of families were happy due to the ban on liquor shops during the lockdown period. The health of people had improved by leaps and bounds. However, now the opening of liquor shops again has dampened the long-awaited expectations of the general public.

"Due to the decision of opening liquor shops in the state, the govenment itself has facilitated the faster spread of coronavirus pandemic in the state. Lockdown has lost its meaning. There is no doubt that people who have need to develop their immunity system during this crisis will become weak and get infected by the virus as their immunity will become weak by alcohol consumption. So the liquor shops throughout the state need to be closed immediately and the government should value the sentiments of general public."

Environmentalist Yellappa Reddy, Grama Seva Sangha member Prasanna, Raita Sangha member Kodihalli Chandrashekhar, Veerasangaiah, Karnataka province farmer association member Bayya Reddy, convener of Dalit Sangharsh Samiti Mavalli Shankar and other progressive organization leaders have extended their support to the appeal.

Some drunkards have lost their lives by suicide and some lost their lives by overdrinking. Better close wine shops till lockdown is lifted. Revenue is not the criterion here. Saving lives is important.

The Karnataka BJP government has money in the treasury. All that money the previous coalition government has kept behind is now being used for 'Operation Kamala'.

To run the government 'liquor' tax is the only option as no illegal mining is in full operation. Even if government is functioning BJP's MLA's are busy scrolling 'porn' during the assembly session.

Our state is one of the top five tax payers to the central. In annual more than Rs20,000 crores is collected by the central government. But in return for every Rs 100 the state is getting only Rs15. That even not paid to the states treasury.

No tax for 'PM care' and Ram Mandir trust. Due to lock-down the industries not in operations are not even given tax exemption.

This is the reality of the PM Mod's $5 trillion economy.

Liquor is not the root cause. The root cause is the irresponsibilty of the drinking class. Why blame alcohol? There are many a accidents taking place on daily basis and am sure u too ride / drive vehicles ; but do u tell the government to ban vehicles on the road terming them main cause of sadness that will be instilled in ones home after any mishap??

We don't need suggestions of horses with blinkers.

There is a high percentage of responsible, social drinkers. Some on medical treatment too.

If we could detect millions of corona symptomatics in a couple of months, why not the chronic damaging alcoholics?

We have thousands of de-addiction centres. Herd them in de-addiction centres, treat them. give them productive work for subsequent self employment and release them back only after confirmed reformation.

Banning is easy, Just one page order, that's all. We have to pay higher taxes elsewhere.

And nothing will work in this jugaad India!!!

Either close it forever or don't. What is this drama to close liquor shops. All of these are related to the mind. Then why only liquor. If you all watch closely, except on the first day in a few places, buying liquor was largely a peaceful affair, so please keep going.

There are various kinda of people who live in what we call a society. People who irresponsibly drink and people who drink socially or in comfort of their homes after day’s long work. Bearing this in mind; it is absurd on part of those organisations which are requesting governemnt to close sales of liquor. This way these so called “ good organisations “ are curbing the freedom of citizens just because few other citizens are causing a problem.

CM Yediyurappa, should seriously introspect the advise from various organizations, against operating wine shops and bars in Karnataka !!! The social evil of drinking is responsible for immense pain, anguish, suffering, deaths n disintegration of families.. The government should seek other avenues like cutting down salaries and perks of netas n babus !!! Control wasteful expenditures on irrelevant schemes to mop up taxes in the state treasury....

"and there has been a surge of coronavirus cases too"??? Really? There are some adverse effects of drinking in our society today, and many have suffered, but please don't blame the surge of coronavirus on the liquor shops. The surge was predicted when all of the liquor stores were closed, predicated upon the nature of infective viruses and diseases.
