Mangalore,Jan 11: Medical students need to take an oath to serve the society and thus in turn give back what they received, said Mabel Rebello, member of parliament from Jharkhand at the inaugural programme of Fr Muller Central Research Laboratory on Monday January 11.

Addressing the inaugural function, she said that there are millions of people suffering from diseases owing a derath of proper food and basic amenities in Indian villages. As 70% of the Indian population is in villages, it is there the medical professional need to serve, she said.

After becoming a doctor, serve in rural areas at least for two years. This will help improve the marginalized people in the areas. Calling upon students to be committed to treat poor with love, she said charge the rich for the treatment and not the poor.

Pointing out the misappropriation in budgets she said that hardly 40% of the Rs 4 lac crores budget declared last year was spent and at the same time was not distributed to all the states. It was allocated only to the states, which have ministers and people’s representatives who fight for funds, she added.

Education should empower youth and prompt them to think about the society. India is not only about metropolitan cities, but rural areas where farmers and poor people live, she said.

Mabel also took part in interaction with students and spent several hours in hospital visiting and meeting the managing committee.

Fr Denis D’Sa, administrator of Fr Muller Medical College welcomed and conducted the programme. Director in-charge Fr Stany Tauro and dean Dr Sanjeeva Rai among others were present.

"India is not only about metropolitan cities, but rural areas where farmers and poor people live," says Ms. Mabel Rebello, M.P. Your continued concerned efforts, to uplift the farmers and the poor villagers, as well, will take you higher up the rungs of political ladder. As they cheer "Go girl, go." Thank you Fr. D'Sa (and others) for giving her the opportunity to speak in your premises.

It is always a pleasure for me to see the progress of Father Muller's Institutions. It is a matter of great satisfaction for me to see this great institution grow rapidly over the years. I have fond memories of FMCI ever since my return to Mangalore after my several tenures in various parts of India and abroad. Kudos to all concerned who are working relentlessly for The Hospital and Medical College not forgetting The Nursing School and College. Congrats to you Father Patrick, Father Stany, Father Denis and four other priests who are co-ordinating and working with several professionals to keep the flag of the diocesan flagship flying high.
