Bengaluru: State may have to slice away employees’ salaries

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, May 14: The state government is staring at financial crisis on account of drying of its income sources because of lockdown. Finance department sources feel that if this situation prevails, the state government will be forced to prune down the salaries of its employees from June onward to balance its income and expenditure.

The finance department officials had made a pitch for affecting a cut in the salary of government employees during the month April itself, but under pressure from the chief minister, they had to change their stand and pay full salary to the employees. The government will have to do lot of juggling to pay their salaries in full for May by pooling resources but thereafter there is no likelihood of paying full pay to government workers, sources added.

As the situation is very bad, the government will be left with no other option but to affect salary cuts. There were suggestions to raise loans to pay salaries and to fund certain important projects but the government decided against borrowing as it is aware that repaying the loans would be a difficult proposition.

The government gets most of its earnings from commercial taxes, registration and stamp duty, motor vehicle taxes, excise etc. Unless these sectors begin to function at optimum level, the government coffers will not start ringing, said an official in the finance department on condition of anonymity.

With the increasing cost of living slicing the state employees salaries are not feasible option. The staff who are already underpaid hardly meeting the end meet will be encouraged to be corrupt with this action.
The BJP in other hand enough money to topple government and buy MLA's from opposition parties are not short of funds. The 'operation Kamala' itself is a biggest burden for the state exchequer due to the reelections.
If the BJP has little courtesy for the employees it should cut down the expenditure namely publicity, reelections, election rallies, ribbon cutting and so on.

There are many company who reduced the wages and slash employees overwhelmingly donated to the 'PM Care' fund. How these companies afford donation when it can't pay its employees?

Let's not touch the salaries of the state employees.

Salary reduction will impact only a few honest employee in the government. There are people who can even work for the government without salary. Govt. should not reduce the pension payment because pensioners live with fixed income.

Daily wage earners, private and small scale workers are in a pathetic state of mind and body !!! Many survive less then one meal a day.... the families have become destitutes, they will not die from Covid19 pandemic, but will surely perish from starvation !!! Government employees are having paid holidays, for more then seven weeks !!! Many want Lockdown to be extended !!! This is the harsh reality of life, in our nation.... The government must adjust these unpaid leave against their Casual, Sick n Privilege leave.. No bonus, increment, should be given for the current year !!!

Well said! .I really appreciate your gesture. When the central govt freezed the DA and DR till July 2021 my colleagues were talking about going to the court. When I said about the plight of workers of unorganized sector ,they are abusing me. Will they die if enhanced DR is freezed? Selfish people..

Surely Govt. should cut their salaries. They haven't worked for two months now. No file has moved in the revenue department, panchayats or any other Govt. offices. No registrations, no land conversion etc..Even now, they are not interested to return to work. If they don't work how the Govt. can generate revenue to pay their salaries ?

All are loosing Job every where hence Govt Employees who are not loosing their job and have secured future can give their certain portion of the Money to the Govt. to run the state.
Central Govt. also can do that. Good Move.

To make make quick money in a right way - Appoint 2 inspectors on each District and ask them to catch corrupt Govt. officials and fine them Rs. one lakh when caught.
Ask IT people to raide all Govt. Babus house who used to drink in the posh bars and 5 start hotels.
Additional 20 Lakh crores can be collected in one year.

This is the position of most state govts. Their anxiety to.open liquor shops was a direct result of zero economic activity leading to zero govt revenues. The Central govt could have funded the states by increasing deficit financing, as suggested by the Kerala Finance minister and as done by the US in 2008. But there is no one in the current Delhi govt who understands economics.

It is the duty of every strong and well to do citizen to contribute.
This is the first and worst kind of a Pandemic that has caught us unawares.
So the best to do is chip in and help each other rather than ...
    1.Give Free Arm Chair Advice.
2.Create unrest by spreading fake news and propoganda.
    3.Score political brownie points.
4.Look for freebies ...with mouth wide open hoping fruits and nuts would drop in easily ...
5.Talk to useless people and pretend to be COVID WARRIORS....
    As simple as that .
