New Delhi, Jan 15: Sky gazers are eagerly waiting for the annular solar eclipse with diamond ring affect, to occur in the country on Friday January 15. C B Devgan, of the Science Popularization Association of Communicators and Educators (Space), said that this is the longest ever solar eclipse with diamond ring affect, to occur in the 21st century.
In this solar eclipse, moon happens to be at a greater distance than usual, from the earth. As such, the moon will not be big enough to completely cover the sun. As such, the horizons will give an appearance of a ring. The celestial treat will be visible in India between 11.15 am and 3.11 pm today. The annular solar eclipse will be visible for 11 minutes and 53 seconds, the scientists have predicted.
Various pujas and oblations have been arranged in most of the temples to ward off the evils that are believed to befall on the nation because of the eclipse. The eclipse is set to peak at about 1.23 pm over Bangalore.
The diamond ring affect will be fully visible in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Mizoram states. This is the seventh eclipse to occur in the last one year, which happens to be the highest number of eclipses which can happen in one year.
In the coastal Karnataka, the eclipse will be partial, visible between 11.07 am to 3.07 pm. Arrangements have been made at Poornaprajna College Udupi, Sri Bhuvanendra College Karkala and St Agnes College Mangalore for viewing of the eclipse. The experts have advised people not to try to view the eclipse with bare eyes. It should be viewed only with the eye glasses specially made for the purpose, as a reflection in the dung mixed in water etc., they have said. The temples will not serve the afternoon food today because of eclipse.
