Udupi: Temple Town Gears up for Paryaya

Udupi, Jan 17: The temple town is all set to witness the magnificent and most significant event, biennial Paryaya festival on Monday January 18. The celebration will witness the 46-year-old Shiroor mutt pontiff Sri Lakshmivaratheertha Swamiji ascend the sacred ‘Paryaya Sarvajna Peeta’ and thereby become eligible to undertake Sri Krishna pooja for the next two years.
Whole of the temple town is decked up for the occasion. The movement of vehicles on Car Street have been banned, thus paving way for free movement of the pedestrians.
The 500-year-old Shiroor Mutt situated in Car Street has been given a new look with renovation and looks grand on being illuminated. The mutt is known for wooden carvings and exceptional 1,024 types of lotus carvings on the ceiling inside the mutt. The buntings, banners and welcome arches dot the main Paryaya procession route from Jodukatte to Car Street covering a distance of about two kilometres.
Paryaya procession
The Paryaya procession will begin at around 5 am at Jodukatte and culminates at Rajanagana at 7.30 am on January 18 followed by Paryaya Darbar at 8.50 am. Sri Krishna Vittala Anugraha award ceremony is organised on the same day at 5.30 pm.
Security
As part of preparations for a smooth Paryaya ceremony tight security is in place in the temple town.
Addressing media persons, deputy commissioner P Hemalatha and superintendent of police Pravin Madhukar Pawar said that in all 26 CCTV will be installed all over the town including six in the Krishna Mutt. Control room will be put up at the Mother of Sorrows Church premises. The big buildings will get 24X7 security, while all the lodges in the town will be checked regularly, they added.
Police Security
A total of 1,087 police will be on duty that includes five deputy superintendent of police, 13 police inspectors, 36 sub-inspectors, 80 assistant sub-inspectors and 952 head constables from anti-naxal squad, five platoons of district armed reserve police, four platoons of Karnataka State Reserve Police and bomb disposal squad from Bangalore. Service of special traffic police squad from Dakshina Kannada, Chickmagalur and Karwar that comprises two sub-inspectors, four assistant sub-inspectors and 96 head constables too has been summoned.
Other Emergency Services
Three police helpline (100) centres at welcome arch, service bus stand and near Krishna mutt will be kept open. This apart, check post will be in place at Santekatte, Kukkikatte, Balayipade and MGM College. Barricade will put up in over 220 places. Fire Engines will be stationed for service at Rajangana, welcome arch, Mother of Sorrows Church and KSRTC bus stand. Five ambulance vans will be available for emergency services at Kalsanka, Chittaranjan, North School and Rajangana.
Parking Facilities
Parking facilities for light vehicles and two-wheelers will be in place at Christian High School premises, Poornaprajna College premises, Kittur Chennamma Cross Road and the road adjacent to Bhujanga Park. Light vehicles can also be parked near service bus stand. Buses, light vehicles and two-wheelers can also be parked at Beedinagdde and Royal Soda parking area. The vehicles of VIPs should be parked at Rajangana, while VVIP vehicles have been provided with passes.
