Mangalore, Jan 18: Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ) students of Mangalore University, Konaje, staged a ‘dharna’ demanding the suspension or transfer of lecturer M P Umeshchandra on Monday January 18.

The students of first and final year MCJ began the protest by boycotting classes and demanded immediate action against the lecturer whom they accused of harassment in the name of caste and religion.

The students alleged that during class, the lecturer spends his time badmouthing upper class people, journalists, and his colleagues. The students insisted that they did not want him as a lecturer and demanded that he be suspended or transferred.

The students later continued the protest at the entrance to the varsity and declared that the protest would continue till their demand was fulfilled.

The students said that they had started this protest after sending memorandums to the Governor, chief minister, higher education minster, and vice-chancellor.

Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP) and students union of the University have supported the protest.

This lecturer was condemned by the High court of karnataka for not taking enough classes to the students last year. The High court directed the university to take action against him. The university has not done a thing in last 8-9 months and he is upto his old ways again I think. Badmouthing people, colleagues, threatening bad consequenses are his daily routine. Check Karnataka High court case WP 13193-2009 for more details.

Journalism lecturer whoever he is, has no business to talk about caste and religion in the class room. His duty is to tell the students how to cover and write news items fairly and without bias.
