Mangalore, Jan 19: Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Jitin Prasada said on Monday, Jan 18, that his Ministry was considering supply of gas as fuel for refineries to bring down their cost of processing crude oil.
Mr. Prasada told presspersons on the sidelines of the launch of the Phase III of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL) here that gas was a cheaper fuel. “If there is availability, we look at providing gas to our refineries such as MRPL so that they can use their saved funds for expansion projects,” he said.
He suggested that oil companies could transport their products through pipelines instead of tankers, which were damaging the road. It was safer and more environment-friendly, he said.
Mr. Prasada advised the MRPL to invest in corporate social responsibility funds to build concrete organisations that help society.
He asked MRPL not to be complacent about safety of the workers. On the complaints of people living in the areas around the MRPL that oil was seeping into their wells, the Minister said this would be attended to immediately.
He said he would direct the Managing Director of MRPL, U.K. Basu, to take corrective steps at the earliest.
Earlier, Mr. Prasada and the former Minister Oscar Fernandes took part in the foundation laying ceremony of the third phase of MRPL. The third phase, involving an investment of Rs. 12,160 crore, is expected to increase the production capacity of the company to process 15 million metric tonnes of crude a year from the present 9.69 million metric tonnes.
