At R-Day Parade, Karnataka Governor Seeks Action Against Church Attackers

Bangalore, Jan 26 (IANS) Karnataka governor Hans Raj Bhardwaj Tuesday sought stringent action against those who attacked churches near Mysore and Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada district Monday.

"It is the constitutional duty of every government to deal firmly with the forces which tend to disturb communal peace and harmony," Bharadwaj said in his Republic Day address to the state.

Expressing concern over the fresh attacks on churches, the governor said the nation's founding fathers had a vision to build a secular, united democratic society in which people of all faiths and religions enjoyed their basic freedom and right to practise their religion.

"This is the basis of our democracy and there is no room to violate this fundamental principle of governance of our society," Bhardwaj said in his 20-minute address after unfurling the tricolour and inspecting the guard of honour at the Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw parade ground in this tech hub.

"Karnataka has long been distinguished for its tolerant and peace-loving citizens. People from all communities and faiths have lived here for centuries in harmony. The fresh attacks on churches are regrettable," the governor said in the presence of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, his cabinet colleagues and top civil and officials.

The governor took the salute at a march past conducted by battalions of the armed forces, Border Security Force, State Reserve Police, City Armed Reserve and Home Guards.

The battalions were followed by contingents of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) representing the army, navy and air wing, boys and girls of Bharat Scouts and Guides, excise, civil defence, traffic and music bands of the three services, the police band and school children.

The most popular patriotic song - "Saare jahaan se accha hindustan hamaara", rendered by the music bands in unison, was hailed with thunderous applause and cheers by hundreds of children from around the parade ground.

After the ceremonial parade, about 2,600 boys and girls from various schools across the city participated in cultural programmes, including national and state songs, dances and native music to mark the historic day.

The national anthem was played at the beginning and end of the function.

The main event passed off peacefully with about 1,000 police personnel maintaining vigil in and around the parade ground.

Three platoons each of the Rapid Response Team and the City Armed Reserve were stationed at the venue to ensure safety.

The city police also installed 16 closed circuit television cameras in and around the venue for surveillance and security of VIPs, dignitaries and the people.

Visitors were banned from carrying handbags, cameras, mobile phones and umbrellas inside the venue for security reasons.

H R Bharadwaj is passing his comments and issuing a warning to the Yeddi government as the Governor of Karnataka. Some silly people have written here commenting on him for not talking about attacks on indians in Australia. My dear intelligent guys please note that, he is not the Governor General of Australia to make those comments. He is also not a member of the central government or the foreign ministry now. His jurisdiction is only Karnataka and not Australia or any other place. Please use some sense before writing unnecessary comments.

Can all noble and peace loving people from all communities come together and condemn these attacks. Lets all take oath that henceforth no church/dargah/mandir/temple/masjid wil be attacked. Let the religios belief be personal one and let it not become an object of hate and obstacle to the message of peace and love. Lets unite India once again based on human values and righ culture and heritage. Lets all say no to the parties and organisations who want to devide us and spread hate. Start loving our neighbour. Thats the way ahead and lets all march forward for peace and prosperity.

Newspaper reports suggest that these attacks are in retalliation to the attacks on indians in australia. This sure is jungle raj LOGIC to commemorate sixty years of our republic.A sad irony of karnataka trying to progress forward with a proud intelligent cultured and dynamic human resource and yet sliding ten steps backwards into the stone age with these senseless and shameful acts.

When a similar incident had taken place some time last year the present governor had given a similar assurance that the culprits would be caught and punished,so far how many culprits have been brought to book? sadly the present governor nor the BJP government has not done any thing to safe guard the vandalisation of churches. It surely reflects on the home ministry whose duty is to protect and safe guard the citizens and their places of worship. It is evident that the government and the persons at the helm of affairs are impotent. Oh! what a shame.

The repeated attacks on places of worship suggests that some anti national forces within the ruling party are involved.Such forces dont believe in communal amity and brotherhood of religions. They dont respect Indian costitution. They believe in Manu-vaad which is anti human. The Governor must be proactive to curtail such anti human forces, then only the minorities will feel secure.

Dear Mr. Lancelot N Tauro. Kindly restraint abuses to humans. Every human has goodness the root of goodness is already there. It is not the human who does badly instead the evil possessed humans causing dangers to society and humans. Humans have soul and mind to use. Those hard hearted and evil possessed minded people are only causing dangers. The truth is since this bjp government took over the charge of Karnataka administration Christians, churches and the places of worship are attacked due to encouragement given by them. Even I advise all the Christians not to provoke or retaliate anybody or any worship places. God bless you and all of us. I am happy that the governor raised the issue on the republic days itself.

GOVERNOR saab where was commission report for attacking churchs in and around mangalore Last year?? Ask them to release the report and punish the guilty at earliest.I think that will not happen because it's like Srikrshna commission of Bombay communal clash report which went astray and not even implemented the part of the findings. It's all eyewash to form commission and spend tax payers money.Whenever these kind of insane and sadist minded people exisits in the society and some organaisations misguides them, these kind of incidents will happens. If govt have will power to stop it for good then only we can see peaceful co-existing.

Whatever The Government is - whatever sections of the society we are in - all of us have a right to LIVE IN PEACE. No one has a right to disturb disrupt PEACE. It is god to see that in Karnataka we have indeed a GOOD GOVERNOR who does not discriminate people in any form. However when law and order is at stake firm action and ruthless attitude becomes necessary. Thank you Governor for your assurance of support to the minorities. Joe Gonsalves

Speech is convincing. Governor has done his duty on this particular day. Since attacks are repeating unabatedly does he has served any ultimums to the government ? Has he sought after any precautionary measures ? What about past similar crimes ? Government machinery are deliberately failing to act upon this crime. Hence, attacks continue unabatedly. None of Christians have attacked none of the worship places at any given circumstances. We are proud to say that we are peace loving people. However, Congratulations to Muslim scholars, leaders, politicians and brethren any amount of Sena’s has no guts to attack your worship places at their will and let it remain so.

Does the Govt. need a public lecture from the Governor on a Republic Day to act against the church attackers? Yeddiyurappa should stop the blame game and catch the culprits. Blaming one another is not going to help.

fathima, mangalore. Highly unlikely, but still I wish your desire comes true. Atleast BJP ruled state govt could initiate action against them. We have seen the kind of ignorence, non-action, twisting facts, criminal sheilding shamelessly undertaken by BJP govt in earlier cases.

So many attacks on the churches and so far not one has been arrested and punished. Every time after the attack, the usual remark of the chief minister is "the guilty will be punished and strict action will be taken" it's nothing but statement of mockery and nobody can believe that. it looks culprits are well protected by the administration. How can one celebrate the the sixty years of republic of India with pride?
