Mangalore, Jan 27: The illegal constructions in an area meant for parking lot at a building near Balmatta were demolished by Mangalore City Corporation in an operation conducted under the directions of the commissioner on Wednesday January 27.

The four shops housed in the basement of the Oberle Towers were demolished as the area was meant for parking. The shops were constructed without obtaining license from the MCC and had also violated the building norms prescribed under the National Building Code (NBC). The building owners had marked the basement as parking place while applying for the license.

During the demolition, the MCC officials confirmed the fact that the demolition was being undertaken against the complaint that the construction had come up without obtaining license as well as for violating the norms prescribed under NBC. Further, the parking problem on the road disturbed smooth traffic on Balmatta-Jyothi road.

K N Vijayaprakash, commissioner of MCC said that the demolition drive will continue with 19 such illegal constructions earmarked for demolition for violating the norms under NBC. The occupants of such illegal constructions were conveyed the information prior to the action to avoid any problems, he said.

The demolition drive that began in the morning was appreciated by the public. However, the occupants of the illegal constructions were worried and expressed their anger against the move undertaken by the MCC.

To find a parking place in Mangalore has become difficult It is high time that all illegal constructions are removed mercilessly and that no-new structures come up therein as well. We have seen demolitions followed by new erections in same space with in a span of few months. Any way the action taken is a good measure and laurels for same.

Well done Mr. Vijayaprakash. Please keep up the good work. Only then we will have less cars parked on the road obstructing the traffic and pedestrians. But why only 19 buildings marked for demolishion of illegal constructions? There are hundreds more. There are atleast 3 buildings on the market road with illegal basement shops. There is one building near A.B. Shetty Circle, atleast 3 on K.S. Rao Road. The list is endless. Please do look into thses illegal constructions also, so that we have smooth flowing traffic and place for pedestrians to walk freely. Good Luck. Hope that vested interests will not hinder your good work.

we have the central market area also please keep eyes open dear welldone authorities, where the shop keepers aswell ascustomers cannot park their vehicals at marked or allotted places.Any person is free to do any mainly vegitables and fruits sales on the road....sometimes on the middle of the road,..Why not the authorities have strict adhearence on these illegal trade as we know there is a limit beyond this Central Market..??? Particularly on Sundays one cannot enter this area and move with his vehicle..It is worth it by simply filling pocket of watchdog who picks one seller to collect this & makes big Bag as disclosed by this man...

Another newly built posh shopping complex has come up in the corner of Shivabaghroad/Kadri road. No vehicle parking slot at all and the shop users would definitely disturb smooth flow of traffic parking their vehicles on the road.

Congratulations Mr KNV for your action but then how come the news item says 4 shops in the basement when one can see many more than 4 of them in actual fact. Is it that some garages in the basement got permission from MCC to have their garages converted into shops. In the pictures some of the closed basement shutters remain closed right in front of the eyes of the officials & the public. Please make sure that all repeat all garages as approved in the building plans are used only as garages for vehicles and not as storerooms of the shopkeepers. That will show that there is no partiality.

Almost 99percent of highrise buildings recently built on stilts and having basements are with authorisation only for PARKING in the basement area but have connived with MCC officials and let out basements for shops. Somebody new must be at the helm of affairs at MCC or perhaps at last somebody honest and fearless!

Thank you MCC. Hats off you. Because rules & laws will be equal for all, whether they are rich or poor. Law should apply not only for petty shop holders, it must apply for illegal constructions also. Heart of the city not Balmatta, please turn your eyes to Falnir road also. For shop owners or customers dont have facility for parking. If MCC undertake a good an action, no good comments from the public. So bad. If it is political or religion problem lot of useless comments will be arise in daiji world. So good media, we can use for better comments instead of stupid comments.
