Mangalore, Jan 27: The prestigious State level Sandesha Awards - 2010 were announced on Wednesday January 27 by Fr Valerian Mandonca, director of Sandesha Foundation for Culture and Education.
Announcing the awards at a press conference at Patrika Bhavan here in the city, Fr Mendonca said that the awardees were selected by the jury committee amongst various achievers. The awards are the honour bestowed on the recipients for their service to the society, literature, arts, media and education field, he said.

The awards will be presented in a programme presided by Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza at Sandesha outdoor ground in Bajjodi on February 7. P Jayaram Bhat, managing director of Karnataka Bank and Fr Henry D’Souza, Bishop of Bellary will be the chief guests.
The jury committee was headed by its president Dr Na D Souza. Richard Louis, Dr Na Da Shetty, Fr Mark Walder, Dr Sara Aboobacker and Chandrakala Nandavara were the other members of the committee.
About the Awards and Awardees
Dr Chandrashekar Kambara - Sandesha Literature Award
MA PhD in Kannada, Dr Kambara has been enriching Kannada Literature since 1958, starting from his first anthology, Mugulu. He has authored 10 anthologies, 24 plays, 5 novels and 16 research books. Chakori is his epic poem. He has traveled to several foreign countries giving talks and lecture demonstrations about Indian folklore and drama. Kannada Sahitya Parishat has published his Kannada folklore dictionary in 1984. His works have been translated to other languages. He has participated in the world poetry convention in 1985 and 1996.
Among the several honours he has received are Padmashree, Karnataka Sahitya Academy award, Karnataka Nataka Academy award, Pampa Prashasti and Rajyostava Award. He has won film awards for his story, dialogue, music direction and direction. Born in Hukkeri of Belgaum district he presently resides in Bangalore. 74-year-old Dr Kambar served as a lecturer in Chicago University and Bangalore University. Further, he has served as a member of legislative council, founder vice chancellor of Hampi University, president and vice-president of National Drama School, Delhi and as the member of Karnataka Sangeetha and Kannada Sahitya Academies.
Dr Edward Nazareth - Sandesha Literature (Konkani) Award
Diagnosis and treatment of the diseases is done by every doctor but very few of them do the work of educating the common man about health care and prevention of diseases through article and newspaper columns. Dr Edward Nazareth is one among them.
Despite his heavy schedule as the professor and head of the orthopaedic surgery in Fr Muller medical college, 51-year-old Dr Nazareth has been carrying on the work of educating the common man about health care. He started writing while he was in the high school and been enthusiastic Konkani worker.
He has to his credit four collection of short stories, two novels and six books about the health care and sex education. His articles and columns about the health are being published in almost all the Konkani periodicals. He has been using the websites also to spread this health knowledge. Two of his books have received the TMP Pai Foundation and Konkani Sahitya Academy awards respectively. He was also honoured with Rachana award for his service as a doctor and Konkani Kutum Bahrain for his service to Konkani language. He has been founder secretary of the Konkani Writers’ Forum, the president of Konkani Bhasha Mandal and lends his services as a resource person at seminars on sex education and marriage counseling.
Janaki Brahmavar - Sandesha Literature Award (Tulu)
MA, B Ed, Janaki Brahmavar is one among the very few women writers in Tulu language. She retired after a teaching profession of 35 years. She is a prolific writer both in Kannada and Tulu with stories, novels, poetry and dramas to her credit. Her Tulu novels, Kuduruda Kedage, Kappu Gidi, Rukku and Yuga Magarnaga, are popular. Her Tirgatada Tirl is the first travelogue in Tulu. Amar Baidyer is one of her tulu plays.
She has also translated the plays by Kuvempu, Dr Siddalingaiah and others to Tulu. Her Kuduruda Kedage is the text for MA optional lanuguge. Paniyadi Novel Award, Tulunada Tulushree Award and Kannada Tulu Sahitya Academy book award are among the honours bestowed on her.
Kalamandalam Usha Dathar - Sandesha Arts Award
Born in Arasikere and presently working as the reader in the Dance department of Bangalore University, danseuse Smt Usha Dathar has been striving for the preservation and promotion of Indian classical dance styles- Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kuchipudi and temple dance.
She has given more than 700 dance recitals in the past 25 years including those in the presence of distinguished guests. She is promoting the Indian classical dance styles in her own Dathar Institiute of Classical Arts.
She undertook a tour of Europe for 3 months in 1980 and gave dance recitals and lecture demonstrations in several countries. She has directed the dances in the award winning Kannada film Kadu Kudure and Hindi film Natya Rani Shakuntala.
Karnataka Tilaka by Sangeetha Nataka Academy, Rajyotsava Award and Kempe Gowda award are among the honours bestowed on her. She has served as the member of Bangalore Doordarshan, Kathakkali Dance Book Committee and Karnataka Nataka Academy. Presently she is the member of the censor board.
Dinesh Amin Mattu - Sandesha Journalism Award
Dinesh Amin Mattu was born in Mumbai. He worked as editor and has been the reporter in Tumkur, Dharwad and Delhi. He is presently the assistant editor working in Bangalore. He worked as a chief reporter in Delhi reporting about Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabjha proceeding, Supreme Court reports, Kaveri and Krishna Water Commissions proceedings, political analysis and Lok Sabha and state assembly election analysis. He gave on the spot reports about the communal violence in Gujarat.
He had accompanied the prime minister on his visit to the Asian Summit in Brunei and the visit to Qatar and Muscat as a media representative. His regular column Dehali Nota from Delhi for eight years was well read and appreciated.
S N Sethuram - Sandesha Cinema/TV Award
S N Sethuram, director and producer of two popular Kannada TV serials, Manthana and Dhibbana, is a simple natured man.
Born in Hassan, a Bsc graduate, 57-year-old Sethuram retired as a government servant recently. He has been an amateur theatre artist since 1981, associate with the amateur theatre in Bangalore and Mangalore during 1981 and 1986 in the capacities as an actor, director and back stage worker. Associated with television serials since 1984, he is mainly identified with T N Seetharam who has been in the field for over 25 years.
His serials convey the message of communal harmony and the progress of the common man with the help and co-operation of everyone in the society.
Walter Nandalike - Sandesha Media Education Award

Louis Mendonca - Sandesha Education Award
Having joined the St Mary’s High School in 1949 as its headmaster, Louis Mendonca served for 32 years and during these years he saw the school develop into a college and retired as principal. During his service he encouraged his students to take part in sports and cultural activities and thus helped in the all round development of their personality. He was the mentor, philosopher and guide to thousands of students who are now in high positions in the country and abroad. He was also instrumental in the development of the Shirva Manchakal area- supply of electricity, upgrading of the local hospital, eye check up and medical camps.
Born in Shirva of Udupi taluk, he has worked for the eradication of leprosy in Shirva and after retirement he started the higher primary school in Belur which is now a high school and has bagged the best school award. He has served as the president of Medical Relief Association of Shirva, president, Lions Club, Udupi, Lions Zonal president and president of Headmasters Association of South Kanara. He has established 500 self-help groups for women empowerment.
Among the awards he has won are the Papal Award Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice and the best teacher award from the Karnataka government
Chaithanya Mandira in Hassan - Care of the Aged and Sick - Sandesha Special Award
Chaitanya Mandira in Gavenahalli in Hassan established under the Kamadhenu Sahakari Vidyashrama has been providing shelter to shelter less people irrespective of caste and creed since 2003. More than 35 people have been admitted in this institute.
Apart from the food, clothes and shelter, the mandira also provides regular health care and entertainment to the residents. They have a goshala also for the benefit of the inmates. Recently they have started a thottilu or a child care home for orphan children. Dr Gururaj Hebbar is the president of the administrative board and his wife is also helping him in this work.
