M'lore: Catholic Christians Hold Silent Protest Against Jan 30 Attack

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (RS/SB)

Mangalore, Feb 1: The like-minded Christian organizations held a silent protest here on Monday February 1 to register their strong disapproval of Saturday’s attack on Canara Organisation for Development and Peace (CODP) building. It can be recalled here that some miscreants pelted stones on glass painting of Mother Mary at the entrance arch of the building near Padua at Nantoor on January 30.

The protestors wearing black cloth mask over mouth assembled under the leadership of Konkani Prachar Sanchalan president Roy Castelino in front of the deputy commissioner’s office here. Protestors also clutched on to placards reflecting resentment over continuing attacks on churches, prayer halls and institutes of minorities.

Speaking to reporters Castelino said that this was a symbolic protest as a resultant of religious sentiments of minorities being hurt. The remonstration will be intensified with recurrence of such incidents, he warned.

After the protest, the leaders of the organizations submitted memorandums demanding immediate arrest of miscreants behind the attack and take stern action to stop the attacks to deputy commissioner’s office and Justice B K Somashekara Commission of Inquiry.

Organizations Konkani Prachar Sanchalan (KPS), Konkani Yuva Awaaz (KYA), International Federation of Karnataka Catholic Associations (IFKCA), Rachana, the Catholic Chamber of Commerce and Industry, All India Catholic University Federation (AICUF), Mandd Sobhann and Catholic Sabha were part of the protest.

IFKCA state convenor Denis D’Silva, zilla panchayat former president Shalet Pinto, Stany Alvares of Mandd Sobhann, Ronald Gomes of Rachana, Santosh D’Costa, Roshan Castelino and John D’Souza of KYA, Vivian and Herel of AICUF, Susheel Noronha and Raymond D’Cunha of Catholic Sabha and youth leader Arun Coelho were present.

see what we Christians get in return for good social work. People are selfish and ungrateful. We should be like the gujus, parsis who will do welfare only of their people and community. companies in Mumbai all top positions are held by NorthIndians and Gujus and middle level and meagre jobs by other communites who do the work and credit goes to the chamchas.

In future if Christians want to help their Hindu brethren please refer them to shetty(who have lot of wealth but are greedy to collect more during wedding time from poor girls family) and to the BD,BJP, RSS and see that they help the poor. all present and future problems solved

Dear Natwar Bangalore, You know, what our former president K.R. Narayanan said? “Jesus was actually for the whole world, not just for Christianity, and for all races, and for all people and his message went to the hearts of people everywhere…” now it is your wisdom how to take his message. Mind you, no Christian involved in the killing of the father of our nation.

Rolphy - Mahatma Gandhiji also said that he liked christ but he did not like the Christians. You seem to take him on when you need him and dump him when you don't. This is the same way that Christianity deals with other religions or belief's. The number count on this protest will not intimidate anyone. The more people get into this the more of a problem you will create. This is not making of a country but disciplining of a religion that has gone haywire in it's zeal for propagation.

Mahathma Gandhi said, "A man who was completely innocent, offered himself as a sacrifice for the good of others, including his enemies, and became the ransom of the world. It was a perfect act." Yes the silent protest is the best protest. Father of our nation earned us independence with Sathyagraha.

Don't worry about numbers. Need not feel discouraged because people did not turn up in large numbers. May be they did not get sufficient advance notice or busy with their own work & responsibilities. It is difficult to take part in protests, especially on a week day that too in the morning. But surely the people will support & join when it really matters as was evident during & after the Church attacks in September 2008. It is the objective & spirit that is important. Small s go on to make an ocean. We need to keep building pressure & mobilise public opinion against hooligans/communal/intolerant forces. Keep up the spirit Roy Castelino.

VERY GOOD MOVE . BUT AS GOD HAS PROVED TO US FORGIVENESS, SILENCE, AND PEACE IS ALL BASED ON UNITY. IF THIS UNITY IS STRENGTHENED IN OUR COMMUNITY THEN ONLY BOLDNESS WILL BE PRESENT.AS WE SEE IN THE CLIPS EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE SOMANY PARISHES IN MANGALORE WE CAN HARDLY SEE SOME FACES AS IF OTHERS DID NOT HAVE ANY FEELINGS. BUT LET US NOT ONLY TRUST MAN BUT KEEP FAITH IN GOD AND SURELY THE PLACE WHERE HE IS WORSHIPPED WILL BE PROTECTED.

It is so wonderful to see many people coming forward for peace protest in Mangalore which is really to be appreciatred. Let us not use weapons or any alms, but peace March with silent prayer, as prayer can do wonders. As St Paul who was prosecuting Christians converted himself & became a great witness to Jesus, these people who prosecute Christians too will be converted without any doubt. Let us keep our trust in Jesus & He will do everything that is good for the whole world.

"Father Forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. " - Jesus Said dying on the CROSS. Do what Jesus told us to do. LOVE your enemies. Pray for them. We all are sinners. Only through the JESUS will we get forgiveness and salvation. Keep doing good works thats pleasing the LORD. Help the needy, the poor, the widows, the orphans, the sick, the old and the destitutes. Use your energies for noble work. The LORD is our protector. Do not worry about security, as the LORD is taking care of what we cannot take care. Lets do what we ought to do. DO GOOD and then be called GOOD. We do not become GOOD if others DO BAD. We become GOOD when we DO GOOD. GOD is with us, Lets be BLESSED by JESUS.

Dear Readers, If you remember, in December 1978 an MP called O.P. Tyagi, a member of Parliament belonging to ruling Janata Party (Morarjee Desai was Prime Minister then) had proposed the Anti-conversion Bill in parliament. I still remember that because of the MASS PROTEST in Mangalore as well as all over India, the O.P. Tyagi bill never saw the daylight. In order to reflect our resentment over continuing attacks on churches, prayer halls and institutes of minorities, the Church and the entire community need to replicate such a MASS PROTEST all over India. I even call upon my learned and respected Hindu and Muslim brothers to join in this MASS PROTEST in order to build pressure on the government to get a fair justice for the cause – Thank you.

I see a catholic gentleman writing about his contacts with the top police officers of the district and also writing about his contacts with the top businessmen and also some top shots of Mlore. But when these kinds of attacks are happening, this guy turns a blind eye. I hope the person referred to is reading this and uses his "influence" with the police to try and arrest the culprits. I also request that person to try adn stop boasting about his contacts and get down to reality.

fredrick Castelino - The commission also stated massive conversion taking place through circumstances and inducement I think a point that we have discussed in these forums several times and all the christians denied that there was any conversion. I do condemn the act of vandalism on the church property. This has to be dealt with sternly. The protest is non violent and the best form. I am a hindu and do not approve of any church conversion activity, but this is my opinion. However, violence is not a solution to anything.

Today only I heard the interim report on the church attacks in September, 2008 by Somashekar Ayoga in which it clearly announced that the miscreants against the attacks were Bajaranga Dala, VHP etc. I do not know whether the miscreant will get punishment. At this moment all the christians should unite together in our entire country and fight for justice which given by the Constitution of India.

However, still impact might sustain if regular protests could be arranged with active participation or blessings Religious Learders too.

Marian D`souza, Mangalore, I would like bring to your kind attention, two points which does not go well with the Catholic religion 1.To curse even a enemy, on behalf of the almighty God, what God would do, and what God would not do. 2.To a statue as sacred. Read the Old testament and the new. God clearly says in the commandments, not to make any statue in the name of God and worship it. Breaking the statue, may be a crime against the law, and not because it is sacred or not

We are called Christians because we are united in Christ. Everyone has the right to their own way of belief, so intolerance towards our faith cannot be tolerated any more! This kind of behaviour is just going to ruin the oneness of the country. Let us be channels of peace.

The silent protest held by the catholic Christians shows a very passive response.such kind of things are not going to work.Catholic run the majority of institutions and even business establishments.Having such a good presence in the city why the response remains only to silent protest. This would make the Catholics sitting ducks or silent lambs. Now is the time to respond actively, mobilise political support, have awareness programs otherwise no body stops the one who digs his/her own grave.

These miscreants are cowards and don't have the guts. They are sure to face the wrath of God because they have pelted stones on a sacred statue with their evil hands which they will lose soon . Whosoever has done this heinous crime does not belong to any religion worth its name and they are anti national elements similar to the terrorists of 26/11.

Of no use my dear Christians. Our Self-appointed leaders are sitting in the Sacred places and we the followers fight for justice in the streets. They make us prey of these `Martyr' deaths. Let our so called Appointed Leaders come out from their Villas and lead us in these protests - fight for justice or else allow us to choose our genuine, devoted leaders. Hope, todays protest was not a gimmick to impress the Justice B. K. Somashekara Commission of Inquiry, which is sitting in D.C. Office!!

This dumb BJP Govt listen to your slient sit in dharna???? No way!!There must be a coordination between all minority community to fight injustice meted to them by sadist/mental unsounded groups. The set back is that these groups have some clouts in the govt and we have no hope getting justice from the govt. Therefore a combained agitation, which may effective in taking our cry for help by the authority, may be seriously looked in to.Anyway BJP Govt can not go away from it's fundamental responsiblty as every now and then minority's place of worship targeted.
