Bantwal, Feb 6:
Some bamboo huts constructed near Tumbe, as a temporary shelter for the workers of the vented dam here, have become a source of attraction.

The huts look almost like modern cottages and have attracted the locals due to their innovative idea of building temporary shelters.

The huts, which are built using bamboo and woven bamboo sheets, provide total shelter to the workers who hail from Andhra Pradesh. They built the huts themselves using available materials instead of staying in rented houses and also because of the non-availability of rental houses in the area.

“Each hut costs about Rs 4,000-Rs 5,000 and the life span of these huts is about three years if they are protected by rain using plastic sheets”, said Narasimha, one of the residents of the huts.

He adds that based on the availability of bamboo and woven sheets they constructed such huts, instead of making tents using plastic sheets. Each hut has two rooms along with a kitchen, where two persons can live easily.

According to Narasimha, these huts are better when compared with other huts constructed using only plastic sheets.

Only some pieces of bamboo, rope, iron rods, and some sheets of woven bamboo are enough to construct such huts.  At Tumbe there are some huts which are already constructed and nearly 20 huts are to be constructed soon for nearly 50 workers.

The eco-friendly huts are vulnerable to fire but they have been found to be safe accommodation for the workers rather than their staying in rented houses far from their work place.

Many locals have gathered to see the ongoing construction work.

BONIFACE, MANGALORE/AUH The teacher here is wrong, and the smart little child is right. Even if you were asked from where you get your groceries from, you will say from the super store and not say milk from the cow, eggs from the hen, bread from xxxx bakery, water from the river etc

Advise the authorities to immediately remove this type of huts as there is more disadvantages than benefits. Reason is very simple, God forbids, if the fire occur due to any dwellers negligence as these dwellers are poor, ignorant, unexposed agricultural laborers’. Majority of the labourers have the habit of alcohol and smoking.

This place is good for consuming beer, toddy etc. without any risk factor of fire close by. Again those who consume beer, toddy majority of them are smokers. So the fire danger is very great. Authorities pls wake before it is too late. Due to negligence of one person entire hut dwellers will suffer and vanish as it has happened in many parts of India. Unfortunately in India the lives of poor has no value. After all prevention is better than cure.

This is something amazing for the modern generation, however there is no reason to surprise or media to make it big item showing something innovative. Today where people go for all the latest technologies for comfort, this may be surprising, but if you look back for few years say 10 to 15 years our parents, if not in the town at least village people were using more or less similar items/material.

It is sad that people forget past or the routine. A simple example is, in one of the class teacher asked a small child from where we get milk, child instantly answered from the supermarket. Today we all may praise their living method, however, when the vented dam project the job is over, you will see them occupying the place and apply for registration of the land, then nuisance for the public.

There is nothing innovative in this. In my younger days when we used to visit our relatives in the village they used to have this tents made in the fields when they were at work. These are cheap accomdation today hope fire will not cause harm to the honeymooners living in it.

No doubt it solves the problems for residence at a cheap rate, but using the said premises, for cooking etc, with no protective arrangements, and especially workers with children living with them and playing more often unattended to, may prove to be dangerous to lives.

This is nothing but a time bomb to explode. Innovation is good but not that will cost lives. How could the authorities accept these kinds of houses, totally ignoring the safety factors.
