Bantwal, Feb 6: Some bamboo huts constructed near Tumbe, as a temporary shelter for the workers of the vented dam here, have become a source of attraction.
The huts look almost like modern cottages and have attracted the locals due to their innovative idea of building temporary shelters.
The huts, which are built using bamboo and woven bamboo sheets, provide total shelter to the workers who hail from Andhra Pradesh. They built the huts themselves using available materials instead of staying in rented houses and also because of the non-availability of rental houses in the area.
“Each hut costs about Rs 4,000-Rs 5,000 and the life span of these huts is about three years if they are protected by rain using plastic sheets”, said Narasimha, one of the residents of the huts.
He adds that based on the availability of bamboo and woven sheets they constructed such huts, instead of making tents using plastic sheets. Each hut has two rooms along with a kitchen, where two persons can live easily.
According to Narasimha, these huts are better when compared with other huts constructed using only plastic sheets.
Only some pieces of bamboo, rope, iron rods, and some sheets of woven bamboo are enough to construct such huts. At Tumbe there are some huts which are already constructed and nearly 20 huts are to be constructed soon for nearly 50 workers.
The eco-friendly huts are vulnerable to fire but they have been found to be safe accommodation for the workers rather than their staying in rented houses far from their work place.
Many locals have gathered to see the ongoing construction work.
