Bengaluru: Pharma lobby blocking Ayurveda kits meant for corona treatment?

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Jul 17: Indian system of treatment, Ayurveda, has proved its efficacy in treating coronavirus infection through scientific experiments. However, the government's delaying tactics are effectively blocking it from progressing to the next phase.

Well-known Ayurveda practitioner, Dr Giridhar Kaje, has developed this medicine. The government has not only delayed permission to use his medicine for corona treatment but also has been procrastinating the permission to supply Ayurveda kits provided by AYUSH department. The people have come to believe that a pharma lobby backed by an eye on business worth thousands of crores of rupees has been working silently behind this attitude of the government.

The team of Dr Giridhar Kaje, as per the guidelines of the central government, had put the Ayurveda preparations of Dr Kaje in Victoria Hospital here and had succeeded in its clinical trials. The matter was discussed in the COVID task force meeting and Dr N Sachidananda, the vice-chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, was asked to place a report on the issue of taking the use of this medicine to the next phase. Dr Sachidananda, who obtained all the details from Dr Kaje, discussed the matter with experts in different fields and submitted his report within four days. Dr Sachidananda said that the doctor had registered in CRTI and conducted research after getting a nod from the ethical committee. He said that in his report, he had mentioned that there will be more clarity on the effectiveness of this preparation if another clinical trial with an enhanced sample size is conducted.

It has been three weeks since Dr Giridhar Kaje requested the government to permit him to provide medicine to about 50,000 primary and secondary contacts in Karnataka, none of whom are infected. But they face the prospects of suffering from the symptoms of this disease in the coming days. Dr Kaje had offered to provide medicine free of cost. Kaje argues that if the underlying coronavirus infection if any among these people is cured, the pressure on the government will come down substantially. Kaje says that the chief minister and health minister have extended support to him. He says that early decision will enable his efforts to get a boost.

Health department sources say that pharma lobby has been creating unnecessary confusions about the efficacy of Dr Kaje's Ayurveda preparations and trying to see that these medicines do not get recognition. They are raising certain questions on Ayurveda preparations that are not even raised for allopathic medicines. Most of the ministers including the chief minister favour Ayurveda. Several of them are already getting medicines from Dr Kaje. But several agencies are creating problems and the bobby behind business worth thousands of crores of rupees and corruption there have been stalemating the Ayurveda medicine's entry into this field, it is said.

Doctors in the government's AYUSH department have been working hard to heal coronavirus infection. Ayush kits which contain Ayurveda concoction, Unani solution, and Chyavanprash, have been distributed to 10 lac people. Ayurveda medicines used in over 200 corona affected people with and without symptoms at Davanagere and the medicines succeeded in their purpose. There is also a plan to prescribe the medicine as a precautionary measure to people with comorbidities like kidney, heart and other health issues and those aged above 60 all over the state. The current stock has been exhausted and the proposal was submitted 15 days ago for fresh funds but so far the government has not given permission for fresh AYUSH kits, a health department official said.

Health minister B Sriramulu said that steps will be taken on the basis of Dr Sachidananda's report and the government wants to give good medicines to help the people.

Frankly, this is embarrassing. As long as Indians continued to be easily duped by snake oil salesmen pushing "treatments" from cow feces to ayurveda as cure-alls for everything from cancer to corona, this country and its people will never receive the respect they deserve on the world stage. They will continue to be perceived as a superstitions, uneducated, and backward people. Indians deserve better. If you truly care about the nation, you will not allow these pseudoscience practitioners to hurt the Indian people and damage their reputation.

I disagree with certain aspects of your comments ..while there is no dearth of crooks in this field of medicine ..the so called science medical treatment too is limited in its approach and is also a echo system of money making mechanism..
We might be pushed to think that every thing about modern medicine is right because they speak in english and present in coat ..While I am not against it ,I am neither against what the ayurvedic medicine or homeopathic treatments ..
ITs common knowledge that turmeric powder and many Indian spices have medicinal properties ..
Cows urine is used as a base in modern medicine which is used for cancer treatment.Infact pharmacies in US use cow urine for such medicines.

Anything Indian need not be termed as psuedoscience .. But I would defenitely doubt the people who might be trying to make some quick bucks through falsified claims ..be it ayurveda or so called modern medicine ..We have seen the irrelevance of the so called WHO which professes and promotes modern medicine.

    Dear Mr. Shetty,
US pharma is not using Cows urine for anything, other than making jokes of our people. Initially even I was fooled by this claim that Cows urine has medicinal properties...The Patents for Cow urine were applied for and granted to an Indian research laboratory CSIR it only means that the right for using Cows urine for specific reasons mentioned in the patent and the benefits claimed within are property right of said laboratory.
It means that any US company cannot use cows Urine for manufacture of Medicines under the specific reasons mentioned say Antifungal, Anti Cancer etc.
It does not mean that cows urine has been a proven anti cancer agent. Hope this helps enlighten.
It is quite unfortunate that a person suffering from Cancer has to be told to take a byproduct of a bovine to cure Cancer with the false hope of cure. It is outright shameful.

It has absolutely nothing to do with Indian vs. Western, Kannada vs. English, or dhoti vs. lab coat. It is an epistemological issue. How do you KNOW what works?

Do you trust people who randomly test statistically significant populations using a rigorous methodology like double-blind controlled trials and placebos, then peer review the findings, and publish the results? Or do you trust people simply because they speak a certain way, dress a certain way, and are from a certain part of the world?

The real issue is a dearth of critical thinking and a poor understanding of what the scientific temperment actually entails. A real nationalist wants their country to thrive, make progress, and for its people to be healthy and educated. In my view, both copying the West wholesale and defending the existing practices of one's own country thoughtlessly constitute anti-national tendencies. They both hold back Indians from achieving their full potential, and they embarass the country on the world stage. You do a disservice to your country when you push pseudoscience.

Since Ayurveda claims to be a science, it has to follow its principles, which state that results must be visible, consistent and reproducible.
However, we are yet to see any concrete large scale published study that proves ayurveda’s effectiveness against Covid 19.
The BJP is in power at both the Centre and the state, and the undeniable fact of the matter is that had Ayurveda found a definitive cure for corona, Mr Modi and co would have lost no time in trumpeting the fact from the rooftops as a win for Indian system of medicine compared to the western.
It is striking that the apex medical research body of the country, the ICMR, is engaged in finding an indigenous vaccine -and not an Ayurvedic cure- for COVID-19?
By all means use Ayurveda as an immune booster to improve general health and wellness at this time, but please don’t claim it as a cure simply based on anecdotal evidence.

Ayurvedic medicines are known for not having any side effects on human body. so these medicines can be prescribed to patients even without clinical trials.

sheer nonsense. if indeed efective, why not do controlled trials like in allopathy and prove efficacy? how do you treat it in ayurveda when you do not know how it is caused? cribbing about lack of a level field gets us nowhere.

If it was done by pathanjali in no time the medicines would have come to the market.
BJP government in Karnataka want people to die. Why not a single minister or their family's are not dying. This is nexus between ministers and private hospitals.

What does Dr Kaje want to prove by giving his medicine to 50000 contacts without infection? If he is confident about the efficacy of his medicine he should trial it on COVID positive patients and show that the patients become negative earlier than those without his medicine. Or he should not claim that his Ayurveda medicine has proved its effectiveness in treating the infection! We hear so many people claiming to cure COVID 19 without providing any scientific evidence. This includes Baba Ramdev!

This is the best opportunity to prove to the world the efficacy and authenticity of our Ayurveda system of treatment. Government must encourage and support Dr. Giridhar Kaje so that his knowledge and research can benefit the common people. All major pharma companies are yet to produce any vaccine or drug to control the pandemic. We don't see any sense in denying permission to Dr. Giridhar to treat people, unless they have some ulterior motives.

Ayurveda is not an approved treatment for Corona or any virus and any kind of sickness. All treatments for any infections, illness should be rigorously tested in well established universities and research centers of well established companies and the research data has to be published to the general public. It may take millions of Dollars in investment & years of clinical research by brilliant students & scientists to find out the effectiveness of Ayurveda or any western medicine. India does not have the economical capability or existing research & development capability to test and approve Ayurveda, Patanjali or common remedies to cure Corona virus, any other virus or bacteria infections or cure for any illness.

    Mr. Rohan Karkera, Mangalore,
Please Find out clinical data on effectiveness and side effects of Ayurveda. Side effect of Ayurveda is Kidney health problem. When you take Ayurveda or any other unapproved medicine one should observe kidney functioning with daily tests of creatine, CK and GFR. (how many people in India are able to have blood & urine Lab tests daily while taking unapproved medicines)

Why these want to play with the health and lives of the people..? Everyone has right to live....When, each one of us understands a fellow person, his neighborhood and develop concern/humanity keeping aside the greed, that day corona will disappear... otherwise poor/common/weak/sick will die. And these people will keep on squeezing rich day by day... Really god will never show mercy on humankind. Humanity is a prayer and not the sounds coming out from mouth.. joining hands
