Kundapur: Minister Visits Naxal-affected Areas, Inaugurates Handloom Units

Kundapur, Mar 23: State sports and textiles department minister, Gulihatti Shekhar, visited several places in the taluk that are frequently visited by the naxal gangs, and held discussions with the villagers. At Hallibail and Kabbinale villages, he inaugurated handloom units aimed at providing employment to the locals, on Monday March 22.

The minister had to walk to the handloom unit from Hosabalu School, as the road is not motorable. Addressing the people, he said that handloom units are being set up in four villages of the taluk under the ambitious programme of the government to impart training to the rural people in the art of making clothes and thereby providing them an opportunity to engage in gainful employment.

The minister explained that he plans to visit these villages once in two months. Under the scheme, those who volunteer to get training will be provided Rs 45,000 as subsidy to build houses costing Rs 65,000, subsidy for buying handlooms, apart from providing to them funds for working capital, solar lights for their houses, insurance and facility for the marketing of products. He asked the people to get trained in using handlooms and join the mainstream of the society.

On this occasion, scholarship at the rate of Rs 2000 per person was distributed to those who have registered their names for the training. The minister also received a memorandum from the people, containing details of problems the people of the region are facing.

Assistant director of handlooms and textiles department, Yogish, Hallihole gram panchayat president, H Shankarnarayan Chatra, taluk panchayat member, H Raju Poojary etc., were present.
