Nearly 1.75 cr small businesses on verge of closure: CAIT

New Delhi, Sep 13 (IANS): The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has said that about 25 per cent small shops and businesses, totalling 1.75 crore, across the country are in a bad situation and on the verge of closure amid the pandemic.

In a statement, the traders' body said: "The domestic trade of India is suffering amid the worst days of the century due to Covid-19, which has brought the traders on their knees with no sign of respite in the near future."

Noting that the Indian domestic trade consists of more than 7 crore traders providing employment to more than 40 crore people, CAIT said that the banking sector has so far failed to provide formal finance to this sector since only 7 per cent of the small businesses are able to obtain finance from banks and other financial institutions.

The rest of the 93 per cent traders are dependent upon informal sources to meet their financial requirements, it said.

CAIT said that traders are under financial obligation for payment of central and state government taxes, repayment of monthly instalments of loans taken from formal and informal sources, EMIs, water and electricity bills, property tax, payment of interest, payment of wages to the labour and various other payments.

It urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take immediate cognisance of the issue of the traders and announce a package policy for traders and help them in the revival of their business.

Dear Sanjeev- Ok Understand less people are paying income tax as there is no income which is not coming under income tax slab. However, whenever and, whatever you buy or sell you are paying tax. Is not that a contribution? and if they pay why cant they grumble.

    Sanjeev Kamath,
Percentage of people paying Income Tax in India: 2.50%
Really ? How it makes any difference ? Because the PM himself said that self reliance by making/selling Pakoda is not a shame. So many cart-based businessmen are there all over the country, making daily business amounting to several crores - did the PM check if they pay Income Tax ? Who is supposed to check that ? You/me ?

Percentage of Indians grumbling/blabbering about GDP growth: 97.50%
Each and every citizen can question about GDP growth because the government has gambled with the nation's growth by not constituting appropriate programs for growth. If the government did not have the qualification to prosper the nation, they should have admitted it and resigned, not kept the population on promise rather false promise and pushing the nation towards poverty. How did the PM quickly raise the remuneration of politicians by 200% in 2014 soon after coming to power ? Whose money is it ? Party funds ? Why isn't he reducing their salary now since the nation is down to penury ?

    Shankar,

You mean to say, all those companies survived unnoticed for seven years ? They only closed because Covid-19 ? If they never performed, how did the GDP never came down before March 2020 ? Why was BJP not declaring that India's GDP has crashed in 2014 or 2019 ? Why did the government wait for the 'shubh muhurth' of Covid-19 to exist for the announcement ?

Covid-19 is with us since March 2020 - say six months. Our GDP can sink to -23% from +8.5% within six months (well, that is where BJP started it's adventure from), our small businesses can come to the verge of closure, then why can't the crores of packages announced in the past six months bear fruits ?

Where did the grant reach ? To those who deserve it, or its sunk just as Old-Age-Pension has sunk ?

Can Burnol holders explain ? Please ??

Everytime I read about GST, I laugh so much.

BJP got into habit of copying everything from congress, the projects or schemes launched by congress and rename/rebrand them.
They never used their brains, Understood they had none.

In such a hurry they launched GST without getting into the nitty gritty and impacts.
It was a grave dug by congress. BJP fell into it. ;)

Jossey, nobody remembers DeMo, GST, Lockdown, Sealdown, CAA/NRC - nothing. Not even the promises never fulfilled.

All the BJP supporters remember is 75.1% votes Modi got for handling Covid-19, and are ready with BURNOL in hand to soothe the opposing voices.

Where did money of lakhs of crores package announced daily by FM go?

Below is the result of asking government help.
Government will not even leave 1 Rupee of the taxes. Instead they will force you to pay any old dues.
Electricity/Water Department will not waive 1 Rupee. Already got an experience of it.
Banks will ask for Compound Interest on your loans.
Your Distributor/Supplier will not give you 1 day of extra credit.
Your landlord will ask for the full rent as he/she claims she too has financial obligations. If you can't pay rent then vacate.
You need to pay salary to your employees on time.
    Pay school Fees.

    Government will do -------- Nothing.
