Mangalore: Dr Shashi Tharoor Wants to Serve Country Forever

Mangalore, Apr 5: Union minister of State for External affairs Dr Shashi Tharoor who expressed his will to serve the country said he has many more ideas in mind to achieve in his lifetime aimed at the overall development of the country. He was participating in a public interaction programme held at Hotel Goldfinch in the city on Monday, April 5.
The public interaction programme was organized by a HRD management college in association with some social organizations.
“Earlier I was in international service and now in the national service and I have lot more service to achieve aimed at the wellbeing of this country” he said. I prefer pluralism along with Secularism and I am passionate about Indian history, I would like to support pluralism”, he said in response to a question. He stated that the word secularism is wrongly used by politicians and the media in India. When we talk about pluralism in our history the word secularism becomes a misnomer, he pointed out.
Responding to a query on whether politicians are ruthless, he told that the statement should not be generalized. There are good and bad people in all professions and this includes politics. There are some good people in the political field also. He said Congress is the only party which took active part in the country’s freedom movement and he was happy to be a Congressman.
Dr Tharoor stressed the need to strengthen the embassies as they promote better relations with foreign countries and their various ministries. “The embassies should be strengthened by providing additional funds and by providing adequate staff” he opined.
He also said that the peace process with Pakistan is a ongoing process and there have been no problems on this count. He said India has good business relationship with China as is evident from the fact that IT giants Wipro and Infosys are all ready to up their business establishments in China and a Chinese firm would establish centres in Chennai and Hyderabad with Indian labour tie ups.
Responding to another query regarding the entry of foreign universities in India Dr Tharoor maintained that the entry of foreign universities would help improve the quality of our education system and would provide Indian students with better educational facilities. He said he supported the idea of foreign universities in India years back when the subject was not even spoken about.
‘I have no regrets being in politics. After I returned to India I got in contact with top politicians and found myself amidst them. There have been a lot of negative and positive aspects of being in politics. In the first year I faced lot of public criticism. I want to serve the country for a long time and want to do something to my constituency Thiruvananthapuram, from where I was elected”, Tharoor stated.
‘There are number of politicians around the world who tweet and they tweet frequently. Even our Prime Minister asked me about tweeter”, Dr Tharoor stated. He said he tweets because it is a social interactive media. He named Barack Obamma, Hilary Clinton and many other prominent people who are tweeter savvy like him and added ‘Bagdad President Hamid Kalifa had clicked a photograph with me to put it in tweeter during my visit to that country’.
