Mangalore: Twin-districts Reel Under Extreme Heat

Mangalore: Twin-districts Reel Under Extreme Heat
Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Apr 6: Since the last some days, the temperature in the coast has suddenly gone up, making the people stay indoors most of the time. The people have no let up from the scorching heat even during the mornings, evenings and nights. The sea breeze, which used to be a saving grace of the summer, seems to have disappeared altogether, giving rise to an increased demand for air conditioners. However, having air-conditioners also does not guarantee relief from the heat, in view of frequent load shedding.

The hospitals have been receiving more patients suffering from symptoms relating to the increasing heat. Many people have of late, been suffering from dehydration, vomiting, fever, dizziness etc. Being under the sun without any protective cover, and consumption of impure water or local soft drinks in shops to quench the thirst, are stated to be some of the reasons for this phenomenon.

The city recorded a temperature of 35 degree on Monday. Karwar too registered the same temperature. Subrahmanya has been the worst hit, with the scales registering 46 degree on Monday. Aged people, small children and weak patients are the worst hit.

Although the meteorological department has been predicting the possibility of rainfall since the last about two weeks, the rains have proved the scientists of the department wrong by remaining aloof. The doctors have advised the people to consume more liquid, use head cover or umbrellas while venturing out and not to consume contaminated liquids.

Thanks Daijiworld for drawing the attention of the people in India and abroad about the scorching heat which the people of the twin districts are going through. There is a historical saying that Nero was playing the fiddle while Rome was burning. What are our politicians doing about the sad conditions the people in the twin cities are going through. Big projects are being spoken about. Let them prioritize providing drinking water to the villages and uninterupted power supply to all. While the politicians are enjoying their air conditioned comforts, let them provide the basic needs to the public so that they can at least have the use of fans.

Let the Politicians live in luxury but let them provide basic comforts to the public.

    Respectfully submitted by:

What we have done so far now it is started to give fruit. We cut down trees, destroy forests but we are not willing to plant trees and we are not bothered to increase greenery. Now its of no use to blame the heavy heat or heavy rain.
Dont believe on Air-conditioners as there is always load shedding from MESCOM.
Better try to increase the greenery and forests and trees in the surroundings before its too late.

I agree with Desmond. Industrialization and unplanned construction is killing us. Just like there is a save our tigers campaign we need to start a plant a sapling campaign on a monthly basis.Only then can we dream of a greener and cooler tomorrow. A perfect example can be drawn from the Middle East where the climate is changing due to the green cover coming up in the region. The frequency of rain has increased and the summers are considerably less hotter than it used to be about 7 - 8 years ago.

We get what we deserve. We have hacked our legs with our own hands by indiscriminately cutting down trees. By all means go for industrialisation and carry out construction works. But please also spare a thought for nature. If only we care to plant at least two saplings for each tree that we cut, things would be much different and we would be living in a much cooler place. As citizens of this world, it is incumbent on us to do at least that rather than complain and expect the authorities to do every thing. For heaven's sake, don't even entertain the thought that the forest authorities or the ministers will do anything to alleviate the sufferings of the common man.

They are quite comfortable inside their airconditioned offices and plush houses. It is the common people like us who have to bear the brunt of the heat. So instead of complaining, let us resolve to do our bit. Let us make a beginning today and within no time, we will certainly be living in much cooler environs. It is our own world and it is we who have to live here. Whether anybody else does this or not, let us resolve to start and it is bound to have a salutory effect on the others. Plant a tree and encourage others to do so. We will all benefit from this.

We have the habit of complaining. when it rained heavily- we complained about floods. Now hot sun- we complain about heat. Unless we educate ourselves how to use the nature we have no other option, but to complain. When Govt tries to construct a dam (to store water) we protest. When Govt tries to install power plant - we protest. One grown up tree cools the surrounding equal to one ton A/C. We know how to cut trees but we donot plant. So this is the result- harsh summer, harsh floods.
