Mangalore: Burkha Row Casts Shadow Over SSLC Exams
Daijiworld Media Network—Mangalore (RD/CN)
Mangalore, Apr 8: The Muslim community expressed anguish over the incident where teachers forced a few SSLC girl students to remove their ‘burkhas’ while appearing for public examinations.
SSLC examinations across Karnataka began on Thursday April 1. Students from various schools appeared for examinations at Ganapathi High School, Mangalore.
However, a few teachers objected to some Muslim girl students wearing the burkha when appearing for examinations on Tuesday April 6. The ban on wearing a burkha when appearing for the examinations was not imposed by the state education department.
Although the students opposed the move by some teachers to remove their burkha, the students heeded to their demands fearing debarment from appearing in the examination.
The students reported the matter to their parents who rushed to the school and took the erring teacher to task for forcing the students to appear for the examinations without a burkha.
They alleged that the teacher had hurt the religious sentiments of both students and their parents by saying that they should follow their religion at home and threatened the students with not allowing them to appear for examination.
This unjust action of the teacher has angered the community and caused setbacks to the self-confidence of appearing students.
Education officer issues guidelines to teachers over burkha issue:
Meanwhile, the education officer clarified that the wearing of burkha is the basic right of Muslims and the examination code has no rules about appearing for an examination without wearing burkha.
The students in other districts have been found to be impersonating while appearing for examinations. “As such cases do not exist in Dakshina Kannada (DK) district, the teachers have been advised not to restrain the students wearing burkha while appearing for SSLC examinations”, said DK district education officer Shyame Gowda to media persons.
