Mangalore, Apr 14: District in-charge minister, Krishna J Palemar, said here that he would get a sum of two crore rupees sanctioned from the state government for mitigating the drinking water woes in the district. He was speaking after presiding over a meeting convened in the city on Tuesday April 13, to discuss ways and means to manage the water scarcity.

“At present, the district administration is vested with Rs 1.7 crore, for meeting the emergency needs of drinking water. Additionally, two crore rupees would be required to meet the challenge. 163 bore wells need to be dug in various villages in the district to provide drinking water,” Palemar explained.

Palemar said that he has received complaints about the non-cooperative attitude of some gram panchayat secretaries in providing basic amenities like drinking water in their villages. He warned the panchayat secretaries that the government will not dither from initiating disciplinary action against the erring employees, if they are found to be behaving irresponsibly.

At the meeting, it was decided to supply water to Someshwar, Munnoor, Harekala, Kotekar, Amblamogaru, Manjanady, Bolantoor and Talipadpu villages through tankers.

District deputy commissioner, V Ponnuraj, said that wherever making alternative arrangements for drinking water becomes impossible, provision can be made to buy water from those local private parties, who have proper water sources. No individuals, who have enough water sources, can deny water to the general public, he explained.

In addition to the district deputy commissioner, Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat chief executive officer, Shivashankar, zilla panchaya president, Santosh Kumar Bhandary, standing committee chairpersons, Rajasri Hegde, Sadanand Malli etc., were present.

It is a good thought of Mr. Palemar to be drilling more bore wells for rural, etc. At the same time attention should be given to feed the rain water to reach the ground. Our rivers swell to the brim in rainy season and the water reaches the ocean. How may salt water disalination plants we have ? How many rain water harvesting units do we have ? Pumping out the water will one day dry the stock underground water - where will we bring the water from then ? Take a lesson from oil wells in the gulf that are begun to dry out.
