Bengaluru: Child right commission recommends resuming classes, exam-free year

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Oct 10: Karnataka State Child Rights Protection Commission has recommended to the government to take a decision to open schools, declare 2020-21 as exam-free year, and mandatorily provide high quality face masks to all the children.

"In the light of the COVID situation, classes should be handled in a good way, keeping in mind health requirements of the children. During the exam-free year, the state education research and training department should prepare the class-wise learning routine for different classes. Initially, higher or lower primary government schools with less than 30 children should be opened. For the initial two weeks, they should function half a day. Schools with higher student strength should be run on a shift system," it has recommended.

The commissioner has expressed the apprehension that if no decision is taken to reopen the schools, the evils of child marriage, child labour system, and child trafficking may crop up. It said that the schools should arrange for preliminary meetings with parents and school development and monitoring committees. The other recommendations of the committee are to create awareness about the need to maintain physical and social distancing, create awareness among the parents, and to appoint personal counsellors to instil psychological confidence among the children. It also said that different standard operating procedures should be drawn for primary and high schools.

The commission has made suggestions to provide hot milk in the morning and nutritious midday meal, provision of free of cost anti-Covid materials, and prophylactic tablets to children. It said that health conditions of all the students should be checked on a regular basis and all over the state, sample tests should be conducted for teachers and children.

We want detailed information from these child right commission...requesting how many children got trafficked, how many got into labour and how many got into wedlock ?? Child trafficking was more even before lock down. Before also, some remote areas child marriages were there when children were going to school/colleges. Every holidays many children go to labour work since so many years. That time, why commission was quiet??? Why didn't take action ? Where was the commission before when small children were employed in houses/hotels etc. Only if someone informs they get up. Come and check. Afterwards what happens no information. Everything parents should provide begging with others for fees etc. how come decisions on safety and protection of a child this commission takes? Before the end of 2020, please check all the schools and colleges whether they have enough basic infrastructure for students. Sufficient toilets/clean water in the toilets/maintenance/ fans/ ventilators and so on. Why can't conduct exams if they open up schools? What about public transport autos/buses etc. Will the members of this commission take up responsibility? Why hospitals need more patients? First pay the pending salaries of the teachers ...

How many children do you have at home to be saying this? Even if they go to school or college do they not take their phones there and use? And children do they not come home and watch TV? If you as a parent would rather your children (and others) go to school/college, fall sick and what else else than sit at home and learn from the safety of their homes then your priorities are twisted. Who would've thought that people would unnecessarily jump into covid hotspots when they have SAFE convenient alternatives available.

It is really sad to see such conflicting views and news coming everyday. Yesterday CM and education minister clearly said lives of children are more important and schools won't be opened. Now this is really confusing. Is it according to the commission, during a pandemic, short term problems are more important that saving lives ? Why are we so insensitive and create a problem which can put the whole state vulnerable to Covid ? We should continue with online mode of education only ( even with some problems ) until the pandemic goes away.

Sitting in classes maintaining distance and wearing quality masks is OK. But the main problem is that the movement children while going and returning from school and mingling too closer while playing etc. When adults are not following the guidelines of Covid 19 how one can expect from children who are too mischievous inside school premises . Can anybody control such childrens childish activities. Let the school authorities hold parents meeting and come to the conclusion of commencing schools.

Why these people are behind starting of schools and risking children's lives. Please look at the countries which started school and ultimately forced to close them due to spread of Coronavirus.

What is the logic? If schools can resume, why not the exams be conducted? When children can sit together, play together and interact directly with each other, there is no problem in writing an exam.
