Mangalore: Kankanady Set to Become World Class Railway Station

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Apr 21: In the last railway budget, it was announced that Mangalore Railway Station would be upgraded to world class shortly. Initially, it was thought that the Mangalore Central railway station would be developed into world class. The then minister of state for railways, K H Muniyappa, had announced during his visit to the city last year that Mangalore Central railway station would be upgraded. Now, it is gathered that Kankanaday (Mangalore Junction) railway station will get this privilege.

It is learnt that a railway station, to conform to the world class, needs about 30 acres of land. Recently, the first meeting in this connection was held in Bangalore. Mangalore Junction railway station got the nod in preference to Mangalore Central station because of the non-availability of required land in Hampankatta area, which is the hub of the city, and where Mangalore Central station is located.

For transforming Mangalore Junction railway station, which is located away from the city, facilities like accessibility, ambulance services, variety stores, automated laundry machines, modern toilets, elevators, lot of parking space etc., will have to be provided. Considering the fact that this station suffers from lot of shortcomings at present, it might even take several years for the station to become world class.

The city has got a new international airport terminal that will be opened next month. A new service bus stand is planned to be set up near Pumpwell Circle. A railway station with all the amenities will surely boost the image of the city. A lot also depends on whether the railways will throb to the needs of the people here for additional trains on certain routes like the extension of the super fast train from Mumbai to Karwar to the city. Political will of the bosses, extent of interest evinced by railway minister and higher officials in the ministry, as well as the intensity of follow up action by the local leaders will decide when the station will become world class.

As we have experienced for the last 10 years specially after the konkan routes there is nothing special about Mangalore stations. infact the standard has been declined. the basic needs like connecting roads, lights etc are left unnoticed. the politicians has to realise that they cannot fool people like making promises. there are no measures taken to control the waiting list in Matsyaganda express then how can we depend on cloudy unreliable promises of corrupt politicians

I am very pleased to know that Mangalore Rly Junction is going to be World Class Rly station. No doubt these politicians say some thing to please us when they visit Mangalore & then they forget once they cross the Western Ghats. We donot want World Class Rly station but atleast " a good motorable well lit approach road" & longer well lit Platforms to hold the entire train & a few shops to sell essential travel items- that is all we the Mangloreans need & content with. Rest is bonus.

The promises to upgrade Mangalore Junction are all to please the public. The utmost requirement before upgrading is to identify world class road communication, transport facilities. Even today there are NO proper transport, road connection not to the international standard. Even Matsyagandh train does not have legal stoppage. When it is not a fully junction where is the question of setting a world class station? Only fooling the public. The public is also so docile, they never fight for these developments.

Sundar Karithota, of Haleyangadi is perfectly right. People of Padil have been fighting for at least a overbridge or an underbridge in railway crossing since the last four years. Let this be set right first. A four lane road is certainly welcome. Indeed good accessibility saves time, fuel and congestion to the general public

Indeed Good News. Only this way, the city can stretch and also develop.
While Padil and its neighbouring areas develop, congestion in the Hampankatta area will ease. Good Move.

FIRST OF ALL A OVERBRIDGE AT PADIL AND A DIRECT ACCESSIBILITY THRU A FOUR LANE ROAD FROM PUMPWELL TO JUCTION IS THE IMMEDIATE BASIC REQUIREMENT BEFORE GOING FOR WORLD CLASS.
