Udupi: Jasmine price rises, stays out of common man's reach

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Oct 17: Navaratri festival has begun. There is tremendous demand for jasmine now but the harvest has been woefully short as compared to demand. That is why this flower has hit the roof and has been commanding maximum price fixed for it since a week.

On Friday, the maximum price of Rs 1,250 was fixed at Shankarapura Mallige Katte. But in the market, it was sold at Rs 1,600. As the Bhatkal jasmine supply has not been enough to meet the demand, it is being priced at Rs 1,250 at the Katte and Rs 1,400 outside.

As only 15 percent of jasmine supply is being met now, the people are turning towards Jaaji (jessamine), another variant of jasmine. As such, this flower has also crossed Rs 1,000-mark. It is sold at Rs 850 per Atte at Shankarapura Katte and the outside rate is between Rs 900 and Rs 1,100. Because of heavy rains, jasmine plants are damaged and harvest has steeply fallen. However, Jaaji crops have not suffered much.

Whenever the price of jasmine went up, I was thinking, why our people do not grow jasmine instead of going out for employment. By the comments of Cynthia, Kirem and Charles, Pangala, I have come to know that growing jasmine is not an ease of life. That means, the saying, "No free meal in this world" is rightly said by our elders.

Villagers must be encouraged to take up mass cultivation, of the exotic jasmine flower crops....There are abundant barren land in Dakshin Kannada district, where only paddy is cultivated during monsoon season... Training and suitable bank loans must be given to those sincerely taking up this lucrative business, which fetches enormous amount of business, especially in the export markets... We in Mumbai have to trek to Matunga, to lay our hands on this incredible flowers, for any family and religious celebrations !!!

Lan... Sir, done... If you promise that you will market Kirem grown jasmine in Washington.... I will grow jasmine. There's good demand only during festivals. Work is tough. Those who jasmine plants will have no time for any other work than keep engaged in the jasmine work. Every fifteen days medicine to spray.... to soften the ground around the roots, early morning to spray water on the plants for the dew to clean. People say they can't leave the house and go on vacation.... and so on. Charles, pangla knows this very well. Actually, Lan.. Sir, those who grow jasmine and shed sweat behind it without food till afternoon etc. wont get the money. They will get part of it... .

Langoolacharya., Belman / Washington, DC.....supplying the Jasmine plants is not a great deal. Taking care of them is !!!!!. In my young age I remember none of the funerals were held before 3 P.M and none of the marriage functions or any functions were started before 2 PM. And the food was served after that. No doubt a family can survive with this Jasmine cultivation comfortably but it is a labourious work. " Sonta bene nanala nenapu undu"

Yes... I do understand the difficulties of our jasmine plant growers. I have seen in my own eyes when I was visiting my relatives. The difficulties they undergo for the plant to keep healthy, should be properly rewardable .. From dawn to dusk... Even in the evenings they are at their garden to remove the leftover jasmines which if they leave would get worms......"Sonta bene" nenpu bathinda Charles Sir, yenklena konkan kogul...gem of konkani Shriman Wilfys song you listen.... ಕಳೆ ಪಾಂಗ್ಳಾಚೆ......konkani legend directly/ indirectly described your efforts in short and properly made known your hard work to the whole world. You will forget your "sonta bene" if you listen that song...
