Mangaluru, Nov 5: St Aloysius Evening College is organizing an online course on Personal Investment Management. The course covers almost every area of personal finance like a personal investment and financial planning, where to invest and where not to, stock markets, mutual funds, personal income tax, NRI investments and a guide to real estate investing. The faculty comprises of investment services professionals, chartered accountants, etc, who have decades of hands-on experience in their respective fields.
The course answers various money-related queries that hover around, such as:
Q1: I’m 34 years old, the sole breadwinner of my family. My wife is a homemaker and we have two kids aged about six and three. I don’t have much savings. Thanks to fat EMIs and fatter loans. God forbid if something happens to my life, my family will be devastated. Out of hundreds of life insurance policies, can someone tell me a suitable policy?
Q2: We live in a VUCA world (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity). Coronavirus has multiplied VUCA. I’m not sure whether I’ll see my salary slip or the pink slip first. Yes, I need to have an emergency fund. Can someone tell me how much I need to set aside for emergencies and the suitable investment avenue?
Q3: I want to FIRE. I mean I wish to achieve Financial Independence and Retire Early. I have started investing in some retirement plans. Can someone tell me is it good? Will I be able to retire early? Will it give good returns? What if the market falls?
Q4: Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Diversification is the mantra. I have diversified my investments across two life insurance agents, one mutual fund distributor, a little with my friendly relationship manager who keeps changing once every six months and also I act on a few stock tips. Can someone tell me if I’m diversified enough or should I diversify further?
Q5: My uncle is aged 70 years. He keeps complaining that these days the interest rates are like the nursery rhyme on the London Bridge. Can someone tell him the most prudent way to earn monthly regular returns while assuring the safety of capital?
Q6: At the fag end of any and every communication, mutual funds state that 'Mutual Funds are subject to market risks, please read the offer documents carefully before investing'. Can someone decode this for me? Also, can someone tell me why mutual funds are sahihai?
One can check for the answers on google but as Mitchell Kapor says 'getting information off the internet is like taking a drink from a fire hydrant'.
Fortunately, the course would enable me to learn the tenets of Personal Finance and one can count it as a reliable source.
The course is not restricted to students alone, rather, people from all walks of life starting from entrepreneurs and bankers to doctors, homemakers, retirees etc form part of it. To do this course one need not have a finance or commerce background, all that is needed is a keenness to learn and improve one's financial life. People having a phobia of math, need not worry because the world’s greatest investor ‘Warren Buffet’ is by our side; he says, “If calculus or algebra were required to be a great investor, I would have to go back to delivering newspapers.”
The course on Personal Investment Management is in its sixteenth year. Due to the pandemic, the course is being taken online and will commence on November 12.
