Udupi, May 11: Swati Acharya, a II PUC arts student of Padubidri Government Junior College, near here, bagged the first place in the district and made history in the 25-year existence of her college.
Swati who hails from an economically poor family secured this distinction by rolling ‘beedies’ at home after return from college each day.
She is the second of the three daughters of Jagdish and Jayalaxmi Acharya, residing in Padebettu village under Padubidri gram panchayat.
Swati was keen about academics since her early childhood. She wanted to pursue studies in science after her SSLC which she passed with high marks.
However, owing to acute poverty, she had to shelve her plans of joining a science college which would require her to seek admission in a college away from home.
Swati’s father Jagdish is a petty goldsmith who manages the family with his meager earnings. Her mother Jayalaxmi was supplementing the family income by ‘beedi’ rolling.
The family had to support the education of three daughters from their pooled income. Swati sacrificed her interest in sports so as to join her mother in beedi rolling after retuning from college each day.She continued her studies and her dream of bagging the first place in the district was realized this year.
Swati dreams of pursuing higher studies which can be realized only with generous contributions from philanthropists.
“I wanted to join I PUC science after my SSLC, which remained as a mirage due to acute poverty in the family. Furthermore, the family had to support studies of my other sisters which made me to join arts in the Government College. I rolled beedies to earn a little money. I want to pursue B Com and get a good job and start earning to take care of my parents and sisters”, says Swati hopefully. She also acknowledges the support of her parents and sisters in life.
Jagdish Acharya said, “I will support her studies despite financial constraint”.
Swati Acharya seeks financial support from generous philanthropists, to realize her goal.
