Dubai, Dec 3: Over 11 million environmental heroes from 165 countries are participating in the World Clean-up Day 2020. As soon as Covid-19 hit the world, governments, non-government organisations and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) body changed course to channel their resources into dealing with the pandemic. However, environmentalist showed how they care about a waste-free and healthy world despite restrictions posed by Covid-19.
To tackle environmental challenges, we have to collect mismanaged waste from nature and also create a well-functioning system where waste is taken as a resource, too. This can be achieved with creating awareness – of the need to produce far less waste, and of necessity to sort the waste. One of the focuses this year was the cigarette litter campaign. “Cigarette butts are the number one waste type that largely picked up during the clean-ups. The issue is huge – six trillion cigarette butts are produced each year, of which 4.5 trillion ends up in nature and contributing to the microplastic problem that the world faces today as Experts quote.
