    Authorities must be proactive & dynamic, they should conduct periodic surprise raids & catch these rogues red-handed, prove them guilty & give severe punishment so they don't indulge in it again!

    What's the use of giving instructions from their offices?
    These fishermen might be doing it with the tacit understanding of officials hence they would not care for such verbal warnings!

    Sir,
    Instead of waiting for people to complain why not send flying squads, have surprise raids, get lab reports and take these guilty people to task?

    Udupi: Excessive use of formalin to preserve fish - DC Jagadeesha issues warning. They should NOT use formalin at all. That too we eat the fish.

    Can formaldehyde cause cancer?

    Although the short-term health effects of formaldehyde exposure are well known, less is known about its potential long-term health effects. In 1980, laboratory studies showed that exposure to formaldehyde could cause nasal cancer in rats. This finding raised the question of whether formaldehyde exposure could also cause cancer in humans. In 1987, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified formaldehyde as a probable human carcinogen under conditions of unusually high or prolonged exposure (1). Since that time, some studies of humans have suggested that formaldehyde exposure is associated with certain types of cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies formaldehyde as a human carcinogen (2). In 2011, the National Toxicology Program, an interagency program of the Department of Health and Human Services, named formaldehyde as a known human carcinogen in its 12th Report on Carcinogens (3).

    @Alwyn,
    By forbidding ''Excessive use of Formalin"', this guy has turned a blind eye on the illegal use of the product, that is harmful for human health.

    To my knowledge, Formalin is used for preserving human corpses in the Mortuary ??

    It is also used to preserve specimens of animals, snakes, fishes, biological matter in labs used in schools, research centers etc.?

    Sometime back, i experienced the excessive use of this harmful chemical, when i purchased two KGs of fresh looking Tiger Prawns from main Fish market at Udupi.

    My dish became total waste due to the overwhelming odors and abnormal taste it caused in the mouth.

    Fish sent from Mangalore/Udupi to Goa was blocked by health authorities for the same reason .

    Jai Hind.

    @Alwyn,
    I must also add, due to the fish traders / Govt. not investing enough to provide cold storage facilities, refrigerated containers/Trucks/Trains, and total absence of facilities to keep fish fresh at the fish vending stall levels, makes it easier to artificially keep fish fresh longer, using harmful Formalin at the expense of the paying customers.

    We are a country of Fakism, short cuts, unscrupulous business culture which has reached the skies (unfortunately)!!!

    Jai Hind!!!

    Sir,
    What one means by "excess" (generic term) formalin?

    In fact, they should not be using formalin at all, which is a very very dangerous chemical!
