Bengaluru: No cash payment - FASTag mandatory from January 1

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Dec 19: The vehicle owners who have so far ignored the campaign undertaken by the government since a year exhorting them to switch over to FASTag payments at the toll plazas will find it harder to pass toll gates without FASTag from January 1, 2021. The cash payment lanes are being removed from the toll gates from January 1, 2021.

This measure is aimed at reducing the vehicular density at the toll plazas, saving on fuel etc. The FASTag system had been made compulsory from January 15 this year. A separate cash lane was being fixed at toll plazas for people without FASTag. As per the current rules, vehicles without FASTag moving on FASTag routes were made to pay double the charges. But now, the cash payment lanes are being done away with. With the onset of the New Year, all the lanes will be FASTag lanes.

As of now, about ten percent of vehicles are moving without FASTag. When FASTag was made compulsory, the number of FASTag users had gone up from 15 lac to over two crore. Still, a few vehicles are yet to shift to the FASTag regime. Even now provision has been made to pay twice the charges if they do not have FASTag.

After the FASTag was introduced, there was about a 25 percent jump in the toll collection. FASTag can be bought from branches of 22 banks named by the central government, specified petrol bunks, NHAI centres in toll plazas etc. Registration certificate of vehicle, driving licence, two passport size photos, voters’ identity card or Aadhar card will be required to acquire FASTag stickers. They are also available through shopping websites.

After paying so much tax, vehicle tax and 28% kind of GST why do we need frustrating and irritating toll gates? Are we getting world class roads after paying toll?? No, unscientific and unfinished roads...! Politicians do not pay toll hence they are pushing for toll...that too two gates within 10KM vicinity. MP Nalin promised to scarp one of them few years ago....people too are busy not interested in fighting for their rights!!

India has stopped developing since 2014, look at Taiwan, bankok, mexico, Brazil these are not big as india but roads are super awesome why ? Because the way govt functions is different, you may not agree with mexico bcoz it's ruled by cartels but still road infrastructure is fully US style.

Fast Tag scanners do not scan the stickers properly. The people sitting in both say go back, come little front, move left, move right etc. While these problems are very common in all toll booths, recently when i was traveling to Mangalore, near Hassan toll booth the fast stag scanner was not working. They told me to take reverse and go to another gate. I told them to bring portable scanner ans scan the tag. The person said it is not available. I told them it is your problem, open the gate, i will go. He told manager will deduct his salary. Then nearly 10 vehicle who were piled up behind my vehicle had to go back and enetered through another gate. In the new gate also we had to move left, right etc. Entire process took around 10 minutes.

    Benefits of Fas
Environmental benefit – Implementation of FasTag has reduced air pollution and use of paper.

Social benefit – There’s a drastic change in the toll plazas, as toll payment hassles are minimized and highway management system has improved.

Economic benefit – The FasTag has also reduced the efforts in managing the toll plazas.

While the FasTag has many positive sides, it also has its drawbacks. It will come as a complete winner only if these flaws are sorted as soon as possible.
