Udupi, Jun 4: The thermal power plant of Udupi Power Corporation (UPCL) located at Nandikoor near Padubidri in the district began commercial production on Thursday June 3 morning. The project had faced protests and got mired in controversies right from the days Cogentrix planned to set up power generating unit here a few decades ago. The hopes of the citizens of the twin-districts, harassed by innumerable power cuts during the days as well as nights since the last some weeks, have now been rekindled and they expect that henceforth, they will have lesser power cuts.

On the first day, 55 mw of power was generated. The company expects to increase the power generation with each passing day, to reach its installed capacity of 600 mw by the end of the month, said Kishore Alva, general manager (corporate affairs) of the company. The second unit, also with a capacity to generate 600 mw of power, is expected to begin generation within a few months.

State Chief Minister, B S Yeddyurappa, announced at the Global Investors Meet that began at Bangalore on Thursday that UPCL has started supplying power to the state grid.

    Hello Shrikanth Gentle man,

Why should we not celebrate like this occasion, people like you should be have broadminded, if such a power plant have been commissioned we should be proud as a Indian instead of that you people hating it. So far you Mangaloren drawing power from neighbouring states dont you feel shame on this. As this is the only Power source in your near by place should be happy also many locals get job oppurunity. Dont write comment without thinking. As India have more demand in power so we need to increase more MW. Are you working in any power sector line, if yes you will not comment like this. Dont feel bad that I have commented on you.

Thermal power supposed to be the most polluting among the power generaters ,many countries have stopped it ,but do we have a choice ,considering the dark days , heat etc.. it is worrisome for our future generation.

It is not a occasion for coastal people to rejoice, as it is already d that most of generated power will be pumped to major cities like Bangalore, Belgaum. The coastal districts will get only 8% of the generated power. So there is no point to celebrate.

As long as our region gets enough power supply, it should be OK. But instead if they ignore our region & supply power to other districts, this will be unacceptable to the people of South Canara & Udupi districts & should be protested by all. Power generation shouldn't be allowed if the authorities ignore our region.

Finally they have started to supply the power to state Grid. My sincere appeal to all local leaders to see that Udupi and Mangalore Districts to get the maximum benfit because we have suffered a lot. The sacrifice of the people close to Nandikoor should brighten the homes of the twin Districts. Whatever the excess power let them distribute to other Districts of Karnataka State.

The visible stack (dark coloured smoke) being emitted from the power plant chimney as shown in the photograph does not augur well for the power plant. Hope this is not the normal operation. Do not be overjoyed with power plant commissioning as the new policy allows pollution at one place and wheeling of the produced power to rich consumers located hundreds of miles away.

Finally some good news and some relief to load-shedding. All depends on how many more industies will be setup in the state and accoring to the demand and supply. Hope to have better days.
