Bantwal, Jun 5: Already there have been concerns about the rising pollution levels of the water of Dakshina Kannada district’s lifeline, River Netravati. People wash vehicles, discharge effluents and in other ways, contribute to the pollution levels of the river water.

The latest addition is the discharge of hundreds of dead chicken into the river by miscreants. This was observed at the Netravati River waters near Kanchikarapete here. The fact that the area here reeks, has given an indication that the birds were thrown into the river a couple of days ago, and worms are seen breeding on the decomposed chicken. The people residing in the vicinity of this area have not only been compelled to bear the unbearable stench, but also are facing the prospects of suffering from infectious diseases.

Even in the past, efforts had been made by perverted minds to pollute river water here, and protests had been held by the people and leaders. Carcasses of hundreds of chicken and their decomposed body parts were found floating in the river water near Kootelu Bridge of Kanchikarapete on Friday morning. As this bridge had developed cracks, movement of people and vehicles on it had been banned some time back. The miscreants are found to have crossed over the road block created on way to the bridge, and discharged the dead birds into the water.

River Netravati’s water is being used for drinking purposes by lacs of people including the citizens of Mangalore city. Water polluted in this way can endanger the lives and health of lacs of people. Unless the district administration and local administration, in coordination with the policemen, take urgent steps to find out the culprits and nail them, the miscreants may continue to get emboldened and interfere with the health of the people of the district, without fear of law or respect for moral values.

George, Agree with you 100%, we need a task force for river monitoring from source to destination and regular check, we has a society have so far failed in checking sanctity of our environment. Having said that we should also ban the practice of immersing half burnt dead bodies in rivers by section of society

This article shook me literally as the water we utilize for our domestic activity is from this same Netravati River, that too we get direct water supply from the Harbor Line, without chlorinating, God Save us!!
Regarding Pollution we can write thesis. But the bottom line is how to stop this menace? and who has to do it? I feel I am morally bound to do it. Every human being is morally bound to do it? Let us introspect ourselves, What is my share of Pollutants by which I defile this Mother Earth ???
I pollute my neighborhood and keep my premises clean, that is the attitude I have developed, and I call myself educated and aristocrat. That is the sad story dear brethren.
But can we come out of this pessimism? Surely Yes. It has to start from me, from my house, from my neighborhood, from my village, and from my city. Then then only Mother Earth will bless us.Our children will praise us and Our generation will thrive healthily and happily for ever and ever. Amen.

This is one of the most upsetting and disgusting scene that was in waiting and as a crime nothing less than pre-meditaded or attempt to murder of thousands of people who consume the precious water of river Netravati which is the life line of undevided DK district. It is time for the people to wake up and get to know their responsibility towards the mother nature and protection of environment for our own life and the life of our children future generations. We people of India take everything forgranted and can do anything and everything because we are a democracy.!!! The concerned local panchayat / civic and police authorities must act immediately and take this irrponsible action very seriously and get the culprits to pay the price for their action, perhaps the best punishment will be to hang them to death from the same bridge in full public view so that nobody dares in the future to commit such act. These are the same waters which flow through the holy and revered land of Dharmastala., where hundreds and thousands of people take the holy dip every day. Where is Ramasene, Bajrangadal, RSS,VHP and all those who revere the mother Netravati. River Netravati is culture & history of Tulunadu and please Save it. We must act NOW before it is too late. Please God Save our Land and its bounties.

We know that River GANGA is polluted and no one can clean it. River Ganga is beautiful only on paper. Now river Netravati is following Ganga. But we are still lucky that we can save Netravati provided concerened authorities take proper action. Polluting of Netravati is a deliberate act by some sadists. I think in India one can see all types of sadists. This is unimaginable in Western countries.

This is not first incident were miscreants dispose decomposed wastes in public places. In my native these type of anti-social activities taken place in the past against which we have responded very effectively. Initially civilians complained with authorities concerned, then decided to make their own arrangements while no effective actions witnessed by officials. Once we realised that there is no meaning in expecting action from authorities concerned, we have formulated teams of volunteers who prepared to accept as challenge to fight against miscreants. Team succeeded to catch gus who dispose wastes during night at sensitive public places (like surroundings of school, residential area, traditional centre, hospital etc) red-handed. Authorities provided thousands of loopholes to take action that compelled us to react in our own way to uphold social safety. Being responsible civilians, decided to react against anti-social activities in our own way, cached miscreants and tied them to electric post, they have been handled by entire villagers VERY NICELY....., witnessed civilians at various locations applied same strategy and succeeded to control anti social behaviours. As we all of us well aware about the unhealthy political atmosphere, corrupt and irresponsible mentality of major portion of authorities, it would be the right time to behave aggressive to fight against anti-social aspects. I expect civilians to react with unity instead of cursing and expecting action by govt.

To every Mangalorean, the River Netravati is the lifeline. I do not know, how many of us are really aware of this great blessing! We have taken it for granted! Now It is our duty to keep this river clean for our health and survival. I thank Daiji for the photos and the report that reveal the filth that is being consumed by us, day in and day out. The city of Mangalore is well known for its best medical infrastructure. However, all that may not suffice, if we do not keep our enviornment clean. Come on, Jago Konkan Jago!
