Mangalore, Jun 10: Infosys vice-president Ramdas Kamath inaugurated the Karnataka Examination Authority’s (KEA) Mangalore centre for CET counseling at Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management here on Thursday June 10.

Speaking on the occasion, Ramdas Kamath said that it was a historic day for the district as the district got its first CET counseling centre. Regretting that rural Indians still have no great access to education, he said only 13 per cent of the Indian population taking up higher studies. The remaining 87 percent still lack sound education. It is the duty of the politicians to pressurize the government to provide funds for the education of the poor and the rural students. Support to the education institutions too is needed for its growth and expansion, he observed.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLA N Yogish Bhat, Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat president Santhosh Kumar Bhandary, member Emilda Pinto, taluk panchayat member Khalid Yusuf, Bhandary Foundation chairman Manjunath Bhandary and CET co-ordinator, Mangalore Shrutha Keerthi Raja were the chief guests.

MP Nalin Kumar assured Kamath of trying to implement his suggestions.

Bhandary said that in all about 65,000 students among which around 20,000 students from Mangalore in the earlier years had to make at least about three trips to Bangalore during the CET counseling sessions. It is appreciative that the current government understanding the problem of the regions other than Bangalore decided to introduce centres not in Mangalore, but also in Hubli and Gulbarga. Moreover, the setting up of Mangalore centre will prove beneficial to students from districts of Kodagu, Kasargod and neigbouring Udupi district.

Addressing the gathering Shrutha Keerthi Raja said that with a successful setting up of CET centres by KEA at Gulbarga and Hubli in 2009, this year the government decided to set up counseling centres in Mangalore and Shimoga. This year the government also organized free CET coaching centres for rural and poor students in 101 centers, thus benefiting students in thousands.

The counseling are being conducted in sessions from 9.00 am to 11.00 am, 11.15 am to 1.15 pm, 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm and 4.15 pm to 6.15 pm. Four rooms have been made ready for registration, verification, allotment and admission process.
