Mangalore, Jun 10: A huge number of pesticides were found in a well near Kadri Park in the city on Thursday June 10.

The horticultural department had dumped packets of pesticides, and farm-related medicines there, which were retrieved by the fire brigade personnel who climbed into the well and cleared it.

Deputy commisioner (DC) V Ponnuraj and MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, along with other police personnel and fire department members were at the spot when the packets and bottles of pesticides were removed.

Ponnuraj, speaking to the media, said that the pesticides were discarded due to the carelessness of officials of the horticulture department and action will be taken against the guilty.

Hema, deputy director of horticulture department, has been asked to submit a clarification about the incident. It is said that the outdated pesticides were thrown into the well along with bunches of grass and leaves.

The reason for discarding these outdated bio pesticides and other farm medicines in the well is not yet clear. The locals of the area informed the police and MP of this on Thursday morning and the authorities immediately rushed to the spot.

The DC also visited the warehouse of the horticulture department. He sealed three warehouses and seized their accounts books. More information will be provided to the media by Ponnuraj in two days.

Looks so simple, but most powerful, smart and active person Mr. Ponnuraj, Deputy Commisioner. Quietly doing great work for the people. I am sure, given a chance to continue for long time as DC of Mangalore he will do many more things. Great going Sir. V. Ponnuraj

Govt should always involve an Ad Hoc Committee from the field in which the department is planning and procuring goods for distribution through public distribution system so that the department concern is accountable. Also the Ad Hoc Committee could check on the misuse by the officials and making profiting through middlemen either buying irrelevant products or destroying the existing stock to procure more and get a big cut from the purchases.

Most Govt officials in all rural public distribution systems are very corrupt and even 35% of the huge money dispersed by the Govt for a particular poor oriented projects are hardly met.

The Govt purchasing & distributing system should be very transparent and accountable to the very Ad hoc committee from that field on whose interest such projects are sanctioned by the Govt. The officials found guilty should be punished, sacked and their retirement benefits should be clipped.

Public alertness and awareness, supported by immediate actions of officials though few will act as adeterrent on erring officials. The resulant punishment actions should come soon, not merely departmentally, but by criminal prosecutions as well, in as much as the criminal actions will linger long, acting itself as a interim punishment.
