Mangalore, Jun 14: Coast Guard personnel rescued three fishermen who were stuck in the choppy waters off the city's coast in what was termed a “daring operation” by the authorities, given the weather conditions at noon on Sunday.

Shaji (38) and Rajan (32) from Kerala and Gunashekharan (50) from Tamil Nadu were adrift for nearly 48 hours after their tiny motorised fishing boat developed engine trouble.

The rescue operation was carried out from onboard the Fast Inshore Patrol Vessel, Annie Besant, by a 35-member crew of the Coast Guard led by Commandant K.L. Arun.

Following heavy rain and gusty winds, the crew had to negotiate swells that were over four metres high to get to the vessel, Coast Guard Commander for Karnataka Padam Shekhar Jha told The Hindu at the Coast Guard headquarters in Panambur.

Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj said that the district administration was alerted about the vessel by people living along the beach in Ullal around 4.30 p.m. on Saturday. The message was immediately passed on to the Coast Guard, but Annie Besant was pressed into service nearly 20 hours after the first call. Some people from Ullal termed the response of the Coast Guard “lethargic”. Ullal TMC member Ashraf Bawa said that the Coast Guard swung into action only after pressure from U.T Khader, MLA, and Home Minister V.S. Acharya.

Terming the episode “sad”, Mr. Khader said the Coastal Security Police of the State Government did not have a boat for rescue operation.

I must say, Lydia your comment on our youth nearly had me falling off my chair and LoL..

I guess most of the people here dont see the message you trying to convey...

As they say Truth is Bitter and it Hurts. One only needs to take a walk in Mlore across most streets and find the youth lazing around and involving in antisocial activities.

Ms Lydia Lobo, why are you so concerned that other state people are getting employment here? Its still India right. Your views make me wonder should all the NRI/NREs in different parts of the world return back to India. Too narrow thought.

We can just be glad and thankful that those lives are saved by the coast gaurd... Thats the least I can do, than just talking.

Dear Ms. Lydia Lobo,I think u will have to chek ur eyes properly or get the news read by 5th grade school children. News talks about fishermen in trouble in the sea & not in any kind of political or communal nonsense. One more thing i wud like to add... u are smitten by mutalik & his team that is why u see him all over ur place.
No where in the news it is mentioned that these fishermen were loitering or causing any trouble to the people nor the news is talking about "Karnataka's contribution to the nation's treasury/per capita income".

Pls gods sake read clearly and then COMMENT !!!!!

Coast Guards should equally equip with small boats and speed boat attached to the mother boat so that they will be in a position to handle the situation like this with more speed. Further we need such facilities to rescue the local fishermen whose profession is to go to the deep sea for livelihood. The Coast Guard should act more like Fire Brigade Services with quick and planned response. Mangalore is turning into a fast developing city with highest density of four wheelers, education institutions, hospitals, modern multi-storied buildings etc. then why can’t the Govt provide a helicopter to the Coast Guard for emergency rescue operation in this region.

Lydia, still you are riding your own horse. Do you know productivity of local fishermen of Udupi and Manglore Dist???? Its near about 800 crores in this season. Come out from your well and talk sensible.  If you cant appreciate them for their hard work at least don't tease them.

If these guys from Kerala/Tamilnadu are overruling the safety warning then they have to pay for that.
I repeat again there is no difference between you and your friend Mutalik.

    Mrs. Suman V. Uthappa,

I admire and salute the courage and dignity with which the fisherwomen put up while doing the business. I wish I could take a lesson from you women.

However, can you explain me how my comments hurt you ? My motivation is for the youth who roam around the city idle, depending on other members of the family to feed them. Would you mind if they occupy themself and be productive ? Including fishing, so that we drive away outsiders and generate revenue to uplift our economical status ?

Dear Lydia Lobo, Open ur eyes and read well b4 u comment. Where did Mutalik's team come into situation? wht we see here is that Coast guard acted only after the pressure from Politicians. I do agree that it is indeed a daring rescue but after the pressure from local politicians.
