Mangalore, Jun 15: With torrential rains soaking the twin-districts all through Monday June 14 night, low-lying areas and agricultural fields have been flooded. The city corporation and the administration in general, are found to be woefully short of adequate preparations, contrary to big promises made, to handle the situation. More and more houses located in lower levels, are threatened with the rising water level.
In Ujjody in the city, water entered Ronson Service Centre which repairs and services cars. Several shops dealing in scrap also are found to be in knee-deep water. In Ujjody area, the drainage system had developed a blockage about two weeks ago. Repairs conducted by the corporation personnel had failed to fix the problem. The mayor too had visited the area due to the persistent demands of the locals. Nothing seems to have been done thereafter, leading to grave problems to the citizens now.
Tiles of the government primary school in Mahakalipadpu in the city have been blown away because of strong winds. A tree has fallen across a shed of a bidi contractor named J Ibrahim and crushed the building. Damages in these incidents are yet to be assessed.
More and more reports of devastation inflicted by water are coming in. Although the deputy commissioner had said that the departments are geared up to face any eventuality, till hours after the damages, no help was in sight.
